Squirrels

Yes! Bless you for asking! As a hard core squirrel hunter of many years, our Iowa season has been good this year.

I am surprised of no replies to this thread. Kind of disgraceful, in fact. No other squirrel hunters here? I can't hear ya!

This year was interesting. A widow of about 94 years of age asked if I would eliminate some gray squirrels that have chased off her favorite fox sqiirrels. Of course, I am always to help landowners where I hunt.

Her farmhouse sits on the Mississippi river bluff and is wooded with many den trees. Her house is smack-dab center of a gray squirrel highway so it was a constant war of sniping with my .17 WSM rifle.

In the yard by her house is a big maple den tree with lots of den holes with the squirrel and bird feeders, and a nearby heated water bowl. I have shot a good number of grays there and on every return I spot another gray zip into the same hole.

I hunt the bluff also, of course. The bluff holds a good population of squirrels, a seemingly constant supply.

She had dozen almost wild cats she finally could not feed and had them live trapped but one big smart tomcat avoided the trap and I think it was guilty of killing the lady's disappeared fox squirrels.

The wise tomcat and I had an unplanned meeting in the woods about a half mile north of the house. He was hunting the same thing I was. I retired him. I think he was the actual reason the widow's fox squirrels disappeared, seeing as how they are slower and used to hanging out around the house. I showed the cat and two gray squirrels to her and her daughter and we were all happy.

cut my teeth on squirrels....don't hunt them much anymore, used to be able to walk and hunt anywhere, no problem. Last ten years or so we have had new landowners buy timber co. land and it's mine now, "POSTED"... stay off! When I was growing corn, we hunted them to keep the population down. Not a lot of fun to clean, but they sure are tasty criters!

speaking of squirrels...we are clear cutting & grinding a 40 acre, 30+ year old christmastree plantation, guys never trimmed them at all...red squirrels are running back out to a barren landscape... looking for what was home....I was greasing up the other day, the foreman came running by me zig zag like...I said what the heck are you doing?? ' 'Chasing a Red squirrel''!!

Chased one with the Grapple today, as I was heading back to get a pull.. he got to the fence with a big 'ol Yellow CAT right on top of him
