wtnhunt
Kind of stumped, think I need to continue to work upwards with my powder charge and have some loads I am working in that direction I have not gotten to try yet. Loading 55 grain nosler varmegedons with imr 4198 and the gun is kicking out the empties fine, but not picking up a new round from the mag. I have moved towards the max of 20 grains in increments of .2 and last 5 rounds tried were at 19.3. Spent brass looks good and is kicking out in the same position as factory loads, but not quite as far. Max coal on these rounds according to nosler is 2.26, with the mags I ran them at 2.235, looks like they should not be hanging up. None of the various factory loads I have are quite that long. Tried a couple different mags, they are not the issue because the factory rounds are working with them flawlessly. Also with the last round with my handloads the bolt is not catching and staying back.
smha6784
I know you say it's not the mags but I had the same problems. but not with hand loads and it was the mags they were loose in the magwell and work fine sometimes and others hgave cycling issues and wouldn't catch the bolt catch. wtnhunt
Other ammo with the same mag worked fine. Moved up to the heavier charge today no difference. Guess I may have to try a different powder? Have plenty of imr 4895. My dpms .308 cycled flawlessly with my handloaded rounds.
wtnhunt
Went up to 20 grains of the 4198 and still the same. My load manual listed the 4198 for .223 and it did give excellent accuracy between 19.3 and 19.5, shooting same holes with three shot groups. Shame I don't own a bolt gun in .223. Guess I should have done more research on powders before ordering the 4198. Turns out cycling issues are common with that powder with AR's in rifles. Loaded up some with 4895 this morning, should get to try them out this afternoon. I am ready to try these varmegedons out on some pests. wtnhunt
Powder change made all the difference. Cycled perfectly with the rounds loaded with 4895.
wtnhunt
Never updated this and probably should have. The 4198 loaded rounds performed perfectly in a shorter barrel AR, the dpms 16 inch carbine, interesting that a 4 inch barrel difference between that and the 20 inch rock river would change whether the rifle cycles, but it does.
