brad dryden
I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 4x4 with the 6.0. I can be driving down the road and my brakes will start locking up on the front but it does not do this all the time also when it does start to seize just park it for 15-25 min it comes out of it I have also been driving it and it starts to seize up but then comes right out of it while driving. I have replaced both front calipers and brake hoses along with new rotors and pads but still having issues. I don't see it being the Master Cylinder but I could be wrong im leaning more towards the Power Brake Booster. This truck does not have the brake proportional valve. Any thoughts or suggestions? wtnhunt
Dunno Brad, but sounds like could be something in controls to me. All this new electronic stuff, could it possibly be something to do with the esp or traction control?
Shaun_300
Sounds like a master cylinder problem to me. Brake fluid may have got contaminated and ruined the seals and causing poor piston return. It being a 2500HD it will have hydroboost assist which runs off the power steering, not a vacuum booster like the half tons.
im your huckleberry
Ok here's what you do, this might work it may not. but when it locks up, loosen off the master cylinder bolts listen for a hiss and wet inside the booster, if it a booster the hydroboost system could have a bad seal, how's your power steering level? This will this may be caused by a pressure on the plunger of the master. This should diagnose whether it is the master or the booster, but from what you said i'm kinda thinking Shaun is on the right track with the master. I hope this gives you some insight on this matter, Oh by the way I am a tech, but the union pays more so that's where i'm working. This is just some things to save you some greenbacks. brad dryden
Well I changed out the Master Cylinder and drove it around for the past couple of days to make sure this was it. Well im happy to say the issue is fixed! Never had a Master Cylinder act up like this before but at least I have all new brake system on the truck now
im your huckleberry
I'm glad you fixed the problem now your ready for the season. To get longer life out of that master cylinder try to change out brake fluid in the whole system every 2 to3 years depending on how dry your climate is, because brake fluid does absorb moisture out of the atmosphere.
