DEER DOWN, I THINK?

Re: DEER DOWN, I THINK?

My brother shot a spike last year during shotgun season. He called me on the radio, and said he found a little blood, and that he thought it had stomach matter in it. We waited an hour, ans I got to his spot, and there were definately chunks, but it was lung chunks. He didn't want to trail the deer thinking it was gut shot. For the first 20 or 30 yards the blood was scarce, then it looked like someone turned on a faucet. you could actually see blood on both sides of the trail from the entrance and exit, and droplets in the middle from his nose mouth. That deer probably made it 150 yards tops at a full run.

No doubt you have a deer waiting to be found. Let us know how you make out.

Re: DEER DOWN, I THINK?

Rambo ... I seriously think that you may have found someone elses deer, unless you followed the blood trail where you left off last night, to it.

You say you shot it last night and it was 35 degrees outside. There is no way there should have been a lot of bugs crawling in and out of it in that short of time.

You also thought you shot at a doe and it turned out to be a buck ...something don't sound right.

I'm just double checking, to see if you mistakenly picked up a 2 or 3 day old fresh kill from someone else.

Re: DEER DOWN, I THINK?

Sorry to hear of your findings. Yep, I will not wait till the next day to go after a deer, even a gut shot one. If I don't find it that night, I write it off. I have had too many occurrances of the carcass being eaten when I go after mine or help others track to do it anymore.

Re: DEER DOWN, I THINK?

Thanks for the clearification. It just sounded kind of odd to me, with the bugs and all, that's why I asked.

It was mainly the bugs that got me going off in a different direction...sorry. smile.gif

I've had 2 deer stolen and eaten by bears over the years, and they can do a real number on a deer in a very short time. frown.gif
