too_pointer
Trying to buy a deer shotgun that will cover alot of areas. Have a few questions. I want a 20 ga. For those who have info, what is the best, 2 3/4" or 3" slug ammo ? Of course I want accuracy, and . power out to at least 100 yards. Please give me opinions, and thank you. too_
fly
I have used Remington and federal 20 G slugs. I've had better accuracy with Remington. That's all I got on 20 G slugs.
Leo
Rifled bore or smooth? Saboted slugs are for rifled bores only. If it's rifled I'd try some Lightfield Commanders. Kinda like shooting any other gun and load. Gotta try a few loads see what the gun likes best.
ruttinbuc
I have a Savage 220f that like Remington Accutips in both 2 3/4" and 3" The gun is dead nuts accurate. I went with the 2 3/4" because they are easier to find and my shooting area is usually pretty tight. The 3' slugs from that gun can really reach out. Turkeygirl
too-pointer, I'm shooting a Mossberg Bantam 20 ga with rifled slug barrel with cantilever, shooting Hornady SSTs out of it, have a Nikon scope on it. My opening day buck this year I took at about 75 years, about as good a broadside shot you can get, clean pass through. I've shot a few other deer around that range as well....this combo is deadly. Each year before season opens I pull the gun out, put my rifle barrel on, and shoot to check it, stays dead on. I love this set-up.
too_pointer
Thank you all, sorry about not providing more info, it is a H&R Ultra Slug Hunter in 20 ga. It does have a rifled barrel, that will shoot up to 3" ammo, and has an attached scope base. So far I have read some reviews with some favorites, Remington Accu Tip slugs, Lightfield sabot slug, and Hornady SST Slugs. Unfortunately many don't mention if they use the 23/4" or 3". I know the people in here will not steer me wrong. :gun1: I don't have a scope for it yet. thank you all. too_
Turkeygirl
too pointer, I believe my Hornady SSTs are 2 3/4" shells.
WHISKEYSWAMP
I've had good success with Lightfield 3" mags in my TC encore 20 gauge... The blood trails have not been that great but the deer usually don't go far.
RangerClay
I was a slug hunter for over 20 years till they allowed us to shoot rifles here. They guys I hunted with shot Lightfields and they are amazingly accurate. My one observation about the Lightfields was that I felt they damaged/wasted too much meat. If you had a perfect broadside shot in the ribs you were fine. However if you a shoulder or other part of the deer, you would have huge gaping holes and wasted meat.
