Weekend Woodsmen
This year during our annual rut vacation we managed to get 2 deer down. This is a time we look forward to every year not only for the great hunting but for the great memories we make. This was the first buck my Uncle has shot with a bow in probably 5 years, you won't believe what he was doing when it showed up! Any of you had that happen to you before? Finally, after getting blanked last year I was thrilled to get this doe on the ground. Just wish the camera didn't mess up on the focus! Also, I was curious on your guy's thoughts on shooting does during the rut? Hope you like the video!
archerjg
Congratulations to you both on two great deer. Definitely take does during the rut. Here in MD where I hunt there are usually plenty of does around so taking a doe during the rut just takes one more pair of eyes away from spotting us. fly
Glad it worked out for you all this year. Don't see a video. Shooting a doe during the rut - sometimes I do. Depends on where I'm at, how far of a drag I have, if good bucks are known to be in the area, if I know bucks are chasing, how many does are in the area. and what type of tag I have, and if I'm in a earn a buck area by shooting a doe first. MUDRUNNER
Congrats to both of you! With all the younger bucks it looks like you guys should have some solid years ahead. Nice video.
wtnhunt
Have not watched the video but congratulations to you and your uncle. Around here does are in decreasing numbers and there are less does than there are bucks, would be a bad idea to take a doe during the rut. The doe i might take might kill my chances at seeing any bucks. If i were hunting where the bucks were outnumbered by does by 2 to 1 or greater ratio then yes i would be taking some does. With so many taking every doe they see i won't shoot one on my place at all right now, especially not with my kids also hunting our small farm. Rhino
Congratulations to both of you. Taking does during the rut? Like fly said...depends on where I'm hunting and if I still have a buck tag to fill. If I have a buck tag I'm passing does & looking behind them for a buck. If I don't have a buck tag I'll choose to hunt stands where the drag is going to be easy to take a doe. Since I'm mainly a bowhunter that also means having a doe at chip shot range too (20 yards or less). Killed a doe during the rut in MO this year before it was legal for me to fill my 2nd buck tag. Easy drag too...heart shot her at 18 yards...went ~40 yards & dropped. I backed my Ranger EV right up to her. I'm not going to shoot a doe from a stand that I consider a good stand to kill rutting bucks though. I usually have at least 1 buddy hunting the same place. Also like fly said...if I'm hunting an area where the deer population has suffered, I'm not going to shoot does.

Tominator
I have one buddy that shoots any doe if he has a tag. I have another buddy that believes it's absolute taboo to shoot a doe during the rut. Personally, a lot like fly and Al here, depends on a lot of factors, generally I skip the does during the rut because I want to see what's following them. Weekend Woodsmen
Thanks everyone. I appreciate your input on shooting does. We have been trying to pass all 1.5 year old bucks at least (I personally probably wouldn't shoot a 2.5 year old), and also trying to shoot some more does. Hoping it will pay off in the long run! Ravin R10 man
Don't know why shooting a doe in rut would bother anything...any buck around is going to follow her track right to you anyways..right? Take your pick as the bucks show up,... my brother did just that. His father in law wanted a big 'ol doe, she came up behind him while he was posted on a deer drive. He turns around, shot the doe, while gutting her the biggest buck he ever saw came right up to them, thick brush delflected the shot, and he ran away. That is not the only time that has happened to us here. Edited December 7, 2014 by Mathews XT Man

Ravin R10 man
Crazy but true, we have had many times that we have shot a doe during the rut, only to have a buck come running right up NOSE TO THE GROUND... or just stand there and look at you, because the doe.."laid DOWN"...boom!...HE'S DOWN TOO...LOL
