The Bug House
I arrowed a Doe yesterday! Finally got my first Deer. 95lbs dressed. I got out well before light, the second to last day and I wanted to get as much time in as possible. The walk in was long and hard. The road wasn't plowed, and the walking was loud and uneven on a thick layer of crust over a 1 - 2 feet of snow. Not to cold at 30 degrees, I arrived at my blind to find it squashed like a bug by a large branch and frozen to the ground, we've had several storms recently. I felt defeated for a minute, but decided I'll stay out all day then call it quits for the season at the end of the day. I propped up my pack against a tree and sat for several hours. It was a beautiful morning. I got cold and figured I'd try to find some tracks. I quickly found a main path beaten down and followed it for a long while. I was finding fresh sign like crazy, and there was still a hot doe around amazingly enough. I approached a hill with a nice thick stand of Hemlocks on top and all of a sudden I hear a group of deer run away on the other side! I climbed up off to one side and sat against a tree, behind a fallen branch. About 15 minutes later a group of does appear from behind a small rock face and walk right in my direction from my left. The wind was in my face and they followed the path and came within 15 feet, really close! I was ready his time. I let her have it and watched her run over the next hill. Easy tracking with all this snow. Straight pass through shot, I had hair and blood right where I shot her. Never found the arrow but there was a 3' streak of blood painted on a snowbank it ricochet off of.
