The Bug House
I spent the afternoon ice fishing on the big setback off the CT River today. We've got 6" + of good ice, will need another couple weeks of cold before getting the shanty out. Guy right next to me pulled up a 23" 4.5 lb Walleye. It snowed all afternoon, was a nice way to spend the Solstice.
Ravin R10 man
I have not yet been on the ice here, nothing like watching the vexilar, settin the hook, having your rod bend, pumping up & reeling down, playing it until it tires, and then coaxing it's head thru the hole...geeze I'm getting excited just talking about it!!..OH SHOOT!... it got off right at the hole!... I hate it when that happens, if you ice fish, it has happened to you... HEY!..I'm marking more fish!, quick drop your bait....lol see what ya went and done now Bug?!....all I thought about all day! Ravin R10 man
Be careful out there guys..an 87 Yr. old guy went through on his wheeler near the u.p. last weekend. Was in Phillips Wi. on Monday, and right out on the ice was three trucks parked by shanties, all within about 200 feet circle....with the warm temps we have had the last two weeks, I wouldn't be out there with a wheeler, and an old one at that! jessemueller
How active are the fish in the ice? I've never ice fished before but am interested in learning more about it.
Ravin R10 man
How active are the fish in the ice? I've never ice fished before but am interested in learning more about it. I know the best fishing is first ice...up Near Ashland Wi. out on the bay, the guys will follow the ice out. Many times as close to the open water as they dare go. The last couple days here, we have had a few guys fall in and a couple ice rescues, as the warm temps have turned the ice very unsafe. The Bug House
We've had pretty seasonal temps .... Until today. Forecast is for temps in the 40's and a lot of rain and wind for the next 3 days. It'll kill our snowpack, got about a foot of dense frozen snow on the ground, flooding some. Shouldn't beat up the ice to bad I hope! Next week looks colder, hopefully we'll get the Shanty out soon.
The Bug House
Back at it today .... Cold as heck! Woke up to -17°F and it hardly got above Zero all day. Caught 2 decent Pike ... 28" 5lbs and 26" 4lbs and a small pickerel. Cooked up some Veni - Chili and toasted a recently deceased friend. It was a nice day spent with friends. The best part about ice fishing is the food! It's like tailgating. Our ice here is just starting to really firm up. Should fishing with my kids soon.
