new one on me

OK, so i gotta admit i have gotten a bit excited after killing a deer a time or two to the point of vocally out loudly giving thanks to God and "yes" out loud. Probably loud enough a neighboring hunter would probably hear me. Never heard anyone celebrating out here in over 20 years of hunting this property though.

Sunday was our closing day for deer and the morning first light slowly comes to a barrage of shotgun shots going on. I am watching waves of geese fly over as a couple groups are calling like there is no tomorrow and blasting away. Hearing both ducks and geese flying away towards my daughter where there were no waterfowl hunters and no shooting. My oldest daughter is hunting not quite a half mile away back behind me, i get a text from her asking if i am in the middle of a war zone. Was a few single shotgun shots here and there and a few that had to have been 40 plus shots in less than a minute. Had to have been multiple hunters in those groups.

Anyhow i hear a single shot sounded like shotgun immediately followed by someone wooohoooing and yelling for probably close to 5 minutes altogether with some lighter taking in between that could hear but not make out exactly what they were saying. They were close to our property but not on us, could not have been more than 300 or so yards out in front of me. My daughter said she could also hear the man celebrating. Pretty sure in that group they had been calling ducks and geese not long before the shot. If it was not in the same spot they were right on top of them. In the midst of their celebrating a cautious doe and a couple fawns comes out. Initially thought they maybe killed some special waterfowl or limited out? Doe kept looking in the direction of the celebration and was throwing her nose up in the air.

Seemed maybe a bit excessive celebration but dunno i am not a waterfowl hunter. If it is that exciting maybe i am missing out? With seeing the deer, then crossed my mind maybe they killed a good buck. We got trail cam pics of two nice bucks just two days earlier. No more shots or calling from that spot and a 4 wheeler left that area about 30 minutes later.

Sooooo, couple questions for the waterfowlers and one in general. First, if you are waterfowl hunter do you carry slugs for deer with you? My understanding is that is legal so long as you are not hunting from a blind on the water. Second, is there a certain duck or goose or does limiting out maybe get someone that fired up? Last, (and fly we already know about your recovery)lol, but do you celebrate to the point on a kill or kills that it is heard well over a half mile away on a breezy day?

With that much shooting my initial thought was someone in the group was a terrible shot and finally killed one. Then they all celebrated as if it was the trophy of a lifetime!

During my serious waterfowl days I never carried a slug. It is illegal to do that while waterfowl hunting. There is a maximum shot size for waterfowl hunting. Like Martin said...could have been a banded goose. Could have been a double banded bird too...federal and state bands. I NEVER celebrate on a kill in the field where it is heard anywhere close to that far no matter what. Doubt you'd hear me celebrate more than 50 yards away. Heck...I share the same hunting grounds with friends & they may want to hunt there soon if not the same or next day too. Now...get me out of the field & I'm liable to howl at the moon...loud!

I think Al might have hit it on the head with his guesses. The only other thing would be a really rare cross bird of some sort. When I'm waterfowling with buddies it's gotten a little loud a time or two. It usually happens when someone is zero for a box of shells and then they finally hit one. They definitely get a proper salute. The 40 shots in a minute sounds like a big flock cupped up to the decoys and a ton of birds fell.

The 40 shots in one barrage would have raised my poaching suspicions since they are only allowed 3 shells in the gun each when waterfowl hunting.

Hmmmm, did not know that. Thought the limit was more, good thing I don't duck/goose hunt. I will have to pick up a copy of the waterfowl regs and do a little research so I am more aware and educated. I don't know how many guys are hunting in any of these groups, but one small property does have several owners.

Was not aware about the slugs either. Been several years ago but had someone tell me they killed a deer while duck hunting, that so long as it was not floating that it was legal, never had any reason to suspect. Makes perfect sense that a hunter would not be allowed to carry slugs while waterfowl hunting. Shot is not allowed for deer hunting in this state, slugs/sabots only.

We hear a lot of "suspicious " activity, unfortunately hard to prove any of it. Some have been pretty bold, few years ago had someone riding a 4 wheeler in about 20 minutes before legal shooting light and the 4 wheeler stopped and then a rifle shot. Was quite dark still. Have talked with our warden about a number of concerns. We knew someone was baiting this year, but not sure exactly where, got to be frustrating for them.

Hopefully we will get more trail cam pics of the bucks that we had on the 2nd. May try to use some feed at one of our cams after this weekends juvenille hunt is done. Noticing buzzards hanging around the bottom today, no telling.....

I agree with Al on this one. Might be someone that had been missing a lot and then dropped a couple in one shot (something like that). The only bird that might get me as shook up as that 12 point this year would be a blue gobbler! Pretty rare from what I hear (1 in 100 million or something). THANK YOU JESUS! :)

I'd have to go with Alan on this one. I'm not one to audibly celebrate either. I've got two banded doves, to which I pretty much said "huh, they have bands, cool." :D No real reason to celebrate like you described, even a rare bird like a pintail wouldn't get me to carry on. To each his own I guess.
