wtnhunt
Post season survivor, knock on wood. Had a couple other decent late season bucks around not gotten pics of, yet. Good to see this one made it. Saw more injured deer this year watched one that appeared to have been hit by a car, so nothing is a given. This one had been one of the more frequent of the better bucks to show up on that scrape line. Pretty sure my 13 year old and i saw this buck during the rifle season inside the woods steady moving. He should be very nice this upcoming season. Figure about 17 inside now and probably a 3.5 year old. How much should he add next year? Hopefully will see more in the coming weeks. Rhino
William all else being equal...by the book...a 3.5 year old buck has ~70% of his antler growth potential, a 4.5 has ~90% of his antler growth potential. Overall herd health and nutrition play an important role in antler growth too but age is the most important factor. I may be wrong but that buck looks like a 2.5 year old to me. If I'm right it's hard to say how much bone he'll add next year since a younger age buck's nutrition goes more toward body growth than antler growth. wtnhunt
Yeah if he is only 2.5 now he could be something pretty special. You may be right Al. Being January and all the other pics i have looked at of this deer i was leaning towards 3.5, but i could be wrong. As soon as i get a chance i will look through the ext hd and load some pics from earlier in the year. Hopefully he sticks around. Don't think we had him much if any at our mineral site, pics were mostly on that one camera. Last prior pics he and a nicer nine(no prior pics i am aware of of the nine) were following a doe back on the 2nd of January. Those last late late season does. Our season closed the 4th and had the juvenile hunt the following weekend.
Ravin R10 man
gotta be encouraging, considering how many of your young bucks get whacked....have seen a few 8's here I never saw last fall, all is not lost to wolves just yet
Rhino
Yeah if he is only 2.5 now he could be something pretty special. Yep...he would be.
Gavindodd
He might make 150's fully grown
fly
Best guess... 130 next season as 4.5 year old - maybe 140 as a 5.5 year old.
RangerClay
He looks like a 3.5 year old to me. I bet you get some decent tine length next year but he will stay an 8 point
stevenjackson
indeed, nice!
wtnhunt
He has finally reappeared, at least we are pretty sure, had pics we thought were him early on in velvet. Guess I am even questioning more on the age on this deer now. Maybe the way he is standing, but sure does not look like he is older than in last winter pics? He did add a point on the left side and tines grew a little longer, not a monster jump by any means though and don't think he will ever be much more than he is right now. Safe to say he is no less than a 3.5 this year and one I am hoping to catch up with this season. Really need some better editing software compatible with windows 10. fly
I don't think he'll make the 130 club I had guessed him at earlier this year, but a solid 120. Good luck finding him this season!
dbHunterNY
i guess I'm with Al. I think he's 3.5 now. also i'd up that percentage to as high as 80% of growth at 3.5 yrs old. in your pictures now it appears to be a typical 3.5 yr old. legs are right length for the body. heavy in the front and lighter in the rear. notice his hind quarter isn't really filled out much. also he has a definite taper to his body with the front being much heavier than the rear. also the neck hits the brisket right around the point at which his shoulder and leg bones come together to form a point. if 4.5 he'd be more filled out in the back and have a deeper neck hitting much lower into his chest. also at that point he be approaching or has approached skeletal maturity so his legs compared to his frame will appear a tad short. not to mention he'd start to level off in antler growth. I could very well be a year off but i'd put my money on him being a nice 3.5 year old right now. haha then again I'm not a betting man either. he's a nice buck this year William hope you have an opportunity to harvest or pass him. - Dan
Rhino
Don't know if I'd say he won't ever be much more than he is now William. Assuming it's the same deer I believe he's 3.5 this year. A lot can happen with antler growth once they make it to 4.5...and older. Of course in your neck of the woods with the hunter pressure around you...you have to make the call if the opportunity happens.
dbHunterNY
at 4.5 many make a huge jump around here. at 3.5 years old he is already a very respectable deer that should make the personal decision a bit easier when the time comes. wtnhunt
Thanks for the replies, I am not 100 percent certain it is the same deer, but he does have a unique feature that is not common. Deer has a kink in his tail, no matter how he carries his tail up down or out it has that same kink in it. Always looking at different features that can help id a deer whether it is a specific notch in the ear or muzzle markings or some other feature. Couple that with the antlers compared to last year and I think it is likely the same deer, wish we had some better pics and some daytime pics to compare. Maybe the 2 buck limit will spare a few more of those we pass up. My goal has been 3.5 year old or better and I am sure he meets that criteria. Given what we are seeing I would probably take that deer with archery gear given an opportunity, maybe not with a gun. Really would rather see one of the girls get a nice buck this year. Still not seen the other real symmetrical 8 that made it through that was positive was at least 2.5, had pics of him into February. Unfortunately still A LOT of corn in around us, was hopeful it would be out before season opener on the 26th. About 2 miles up the road beans are coming out, so maybe this next week. Activity at our mineral site has plummeted. Sure others around here have started putting out their minerals and whatever else they use. We do have a real nice young 8 with great potential we got pics of on this last pull, was still in velvet on the 7th, no pics again until yesterday and he is cleaned hard bone now. Rhino
Mineral site pics here in MS dropped down a lot too William. I think it has a lot to do with the dry weather we've had lately here. Mineral licks were bone dry here in MS when I checked the cams here 1 1/2 weeks ago. In MO pics dropped down a little bit but still got a lot of pics off the last run on those cams last Wednesday. They had not been checked since the last week of August. BTW...if it sounds like I've been a road warrior running between my home & our club in MS and my home & the MO property lately...it's true. Been gone more than than I've been home the past month. Thank goodness were at the point where it's time to hunt now!
wtnhunt
I know you don't need it, but good luck in MO and with the new place in MS Al. Hope you catch up with that 12 you posted in your team thread.
Rhino
Thanks William...when you're bowhunting though, luck can sure help. I've been lucky before and also unlucky pulling arrows out of the dirt.
