VermontHunter
First the weapon in question ... TC Triumph 50 cal. The problem ... The suggested load for this weapon is 150grns. of black powder ( Triple Seven Pellets ) with 250grn. Shockwaves, here's the problem. I have to really force the bullet to get it to gown the barrel and seat, and I do mean force using a power rod. If I try to ram a second round, for get it, it's not happening with out killing myself or breaking something. From the research I've done this seems to be a very common thing with this particular TC. So I've been using 150 grns. of Triple Seven Pellets and 270 grn. Platinum Powerbelts, this seemed to work great, even got good groups out to 150 yrds. until I actually hit a deer with this round, it has very poor penetration results in almost losing a couple deer this past season. I have been told by many friends I need to switch to Blackhorn loose powder and I wouldn't be sorry for doing so, and that a Hornady bullet would better serve me. I know that there are some serious Black Powder users on here and I would greatly appreciate all of you input on this particular situation. I know I need to experiment with different loads but the bullets can get very expensive ... So let me here what you good folks have to say ... Thanks .. wtnhunt
Give xtp mags a try Luke. Way cheaper and do the job. I don't usually have any issues with loading in either of the setups we have. Using a black diamond, the wife hunts with and the accura I am hunting with. Triple 7 loose in the accura and pyro rs in the black diamond. Prefer loose powder here, those pellets may be more convenient, but I am not convinced you gain anything. Custom tailored loads are the way to go imho. Here was my ml'er buck and the story from last fall http://forums.realtree.com/forum/general-discussion/deer-hunting/2040031-cooold-morning-pays-off-accura-good-on-another-long-range-backyard-buck. Turkeygirl
I have a TC Omega Z5. I load 2 Triple 7 pellets with a 250 gr Shockwave. I've only shot/patterned this gun out to between 60 and 70 yards and it drives tacks. I will say I find it takes some force to drive the bullet down to the pellets, but I've never not been able to and I'm still able to load rounds after. wtnhunt
Heard a few complaints about seating the shockwaves. The black diamond came with the xtp mags when i got it back in 2003. They are a pistol bullet. Using the 240 grain bullets. I have tried shockwaves and other expensive bullets and not found any to be anymore accurate. Never used the shockwaves beyond targets. I used my rangefinder to range where my buck last fall was standing from the stand and it came to 170, huntstandlite app from the stand said 172.9. That was with the accura with a bdc scope set on the second circle, hit pretty well right where i was aiming . Accuracy not an issue. No trouble reloading them after a shot either. Wife is not real big and she can reload the black diamond with these without any trouble. Last 4 bucks i killed been with a ml'er. 3 of those with the accura loading 115 grains loose triple 7 and the xtp's and one with the black diamond and 120 grains loose pyro and same bullet. My 2010 buck was the closest at about 30 yards behind me. Took the top of his heart. Looked like someone poured gallon buckets of paint. This last one i killed this year at that distance the bullet hit rib on entry and still had enough oomph to exit. I have recovered a few of the xtp's though and they look like giant core lokts. Furthest any of those deer made it was maybe 50 yards. Last three deer the wife killed been with the black diamond same bullet. She tends to hit the shoulder and the deer she has shot have not gone more than probably 5 yards. One she shot this year was fairly close but bullet hit near shoulder and still exited off side. My 2012 buck. Entry. Exit
RangerClay
My best friend had the exact same problem with Shockwaves and his T/C Omega. Was practically pounding them in with a hammer. He dumped those bad boys I have shot Powerbelt's since they first came out and I absolutely love them. Only once have I ever had one not pass through and that was only because it broke a front and back leg. The bullet was lodged just under the skin. I have read a lot of mixed reviews on Powerbelt's penetration and most of them are on the 270 and 295 grain bullets. NOW ME on the other hand.... I use the 348 grain aerotips and my best friend that I mentioned uses the 338 platinum's. He uses pellets and I use loose Pyrodex powder. I have never had a deer go over 50 yards after being shot. The last two went less than 20 yards. I would try a bigger bullet Luke. This is my 2014 blackpowder buck. He went about 10 yards. This was the deer I mentioned before. Broke his front shoulder and hind leg. Edited January 26, 2015 by RangerClay

VermontHunter
Great info so far, and I will be checking out that PDF on the Powerbelts. Thanks everyone this is helpful.
wtnhunt
Usually can buy these http://www.cabelas.com/product/Horna...h-All+Products at walmart 30 in a pack for around $12 and come with the black sabots. I like the 240's, both the tc black diamond and the cva accura do well for us with them.
VermontHunter
Any thoughts on these bullets from Hornady ?? Very interesting to say the least. http://www.hornady.com/store/50-Cal-300-gr-FPB/
wtnhunt
Dunno Luke, not tried them. Honestly I would have a tough time justifying buying more expensive bullets for our setups when I know what we are using works well. Those are 15 to a box for 18.99? That said, those do look interesting, if you use them let us know how they do for you.
RangerClay
Luke, I forgot to ask before. Are you using a sabot solvent after every 4-6 shots? Even with Powerbelts, after a few shots it gets damn hard to drive in a bullet because of plastic residue. I use CVA Sabot Solvent but the stuff is nasty and it will do damage to a plastic stock. I don't worry about that because I remove my barrel when I clean my gun. I hear that Hoppes Benchrest works well also to remove plastic residue. Brownells makes one but the reviews are not as good. VermontHunter
Luke' date=' I forgot to ask before. Are you using a sabot solvent after every 4-6 shots? .[/quote'] Nope, never had a problem ramming powerbelts, even after multiple shots, I just wet patched after each shot. To ensure a somewhat clean barrel. It's the dang shockwaves that I can't get down the barrel, I just don't understand it. My buddy can ram them all day long with his Omega. I definitely want to give the XTP Mags a go, my dad has great luck with them with his CVA Wolf.
dbHunterNY
in my TC Prohunter I started using TC Shockwaves with the yellow sabot. they loaded but took a pretty hard push with the T of the power rod. after one shot you get a slight crud ring just ahead of the breech plug from the Triple7. I use the pellets but it's probably the same with loose stuff. I got 5" groups at 200 yards with 150gr worth of pellets. I since have switched to Hornady 250gr SST low drag sabots which are pretty much the same bullet. however, I've found their red sabot is a little thinner that allows a nice fit but much easier loading. I've used TC bore butter to clean and seal the barrel and it's got even easier over the years. I've fiddled with powder charges and at times I've gotten single hole groups with 150gr. between shots that's cleaning the barrel good with wet and dry patches. I'm trying to reduce that charge little by little and see if accuracy holds as less powder I feel fouls the barrel less. I use one wet TC blue solvent patch and a dry patch between shots when in the field. just don't forget the clean it as soon as possible with using Triple7. it'll eat and pit your barrel really quick if you forget about it. dbHunterNY
to clarify there's two types of Hornady SST sabots. one has a stick as part of the sabot, which pellets can go on. I use the one WITHOUT that stick thing.
VermontHunter
I'm thinking of giving the new Federal B.O.R. Lock MZ Bullets a go ,, just wish the cost was abit lower atleast for the initial try out .... Any opinion of these bullets ??? https://www.federalpremium.com/products/muzzleloading.aspx
wtnhunt
Dunno a thing about those Luke. Not heard anything either. Looks like they should work ok. If you use them give a report back. Didn't see a price on the site? Soon as we get a little less warm weather, planning on shooting some with the ml'ers and will run some shots through the chronograph. Late afternoons still having pretty high heat indexes, not so good for shooting for me, need to catch some days with the temps below the 90's. Not planning any changes here, still plan on the loose triple 7 and 240 grain xtp mags with the accura and loose pyro with the 240 xtp mags out of the black diamond. VermontHunter
If I remember right William, the Federal BOR's run about $24.99 for 15 rounds. I haven't decided wether or not I want to switch to the loose Triple 7 yet. I definitely need to find a better bullet for the Triumph,,, I've heard a lot of good things about the XTP Mags. wtnhunt
Through the chrony at about 15 yds, the accura and 115 grains triple 7 pushing the xtp avg 2060 fps. The black diamond with 120 grains pyro(old can)and xtp's about 1689, gonna have to try some fresh powder.
