I'm taking my gf turkey hunting for the first time and the set up I have for her is a 20 ga remington express mag with a tru glo smackdown choke. Any recommendations on shells? I was contemplating remington nitros or Winchester double x in 4s or 5s. Just because you can't beat the price. But still open to other suggestions and advice. Thanks y'all

Would give the remington nitros a try if you can find them. The 5's pattern pretty good with the 870 youth 20 gauge my girls use.

Tried the winchester's and they did not pattern quite as well.

Wal-Mart here carries a pretty good selection in 12 gauge shells not so much for 20. When i was patterning that gun had to hit a couple sporting goods stores.

If she’s a first time turkey hunter you want to think a lot about pattern size. You may want a little more open pattern for her because when she has a bird in front of her strutting and gobbling it can be a little(a lot) nerve racking. Either shells will work great in 5' or 6's. I always try to shoot as many different combos as i can to get what shoots best.

I had a youth wanting to borrow my lil' 20 this past weekend for a youth hunt so I changed my choke out to the truglo ssx (it loves the federal heavy weights #7's) and patterned a Federal highbrass 2 3\4" #8 heavy dove load. At 30yds its was impressive, it was open enough for a young kid but dense enough with no holes in the pattern. Yes the 8's are small but for 25yds and closer I wouldn’t hesitate to let them drop the hammer. If she’s shot some before try the Fed heavyweights, I bought a case for $15 a box. And like Rhino stated the Nitros are high but wow do they perform. I shoot them in my 12ga. I personally shoot reloads in my 20ga

Hope this helps and keep us updated, hopefully we will get to see a pic of her first bird.

got a box 10 shell box of nitro 3 inch number 5's at bass pro, found them on sale. She can shoot clays well, so hoping she will be able to lay one down, if not I'll have my maverick 91 with 3.5 number 4 kent diamond steel, and I know that sucker will bring em down. Season starts here in North Florida on March 21, hopefully be able to have some pictures, I hunt public land so there tends to be a lot of pressure.
