RangerClay
We haven't had a poll in a while so I figured I would seek your opinions on something I am debating with others. Here in New York we offer youth hunt weekends where kids (ages 12-15) can get out before the adults do for regular season. We offer youth weekends for deer, turkey, pheasant and waterfowl. During these hunts, adults with hunting licenses but NO guns themselves mentor young hunters. So here is my poll question for all of you. Feel free to comment. Should the mentor on a youth waterfowl hunt (who cannot carry a gun into the field) be required to purchase a $25 duck stamp and register with the Feds to get a HIP number? Ultradog
Well, I'm the first one who voted and I voted no. So right now the poll says 100% say no.
fly
Only if the kid is not required to purchase. If the kid has to purchase then the kid is hunting under his own license. It won't go like that in many states because dollars drive the regulations.
Rhino
No...not if the mentor isn't hunting. Not any different than a bird watcher being an observer IMO. In reality though the mentor is very likely a duck hunter that already has a duck stamp anyway.
OKstate
I agree w/ Rhino. I would assume that most people taking a youth duck hunting are in fact a hunter themselves and will probably already have the necessary license, but it shouldn't be required if they are not allowed to hunt. wtnhunt
Know the state regs on waterfowl require those who do not have to have a license to buy the federal waterfowl stamp, however not sure about mentors taking kids. Very good question Joe, one I need to check here. No license is required here for farm landowners hunting their own land, but a federal waterfowl stamp is still required. Some other exemptions exist from state regs. Dunno that any of my kids will ever take up waterfowling, but we usually get in a fair amount of birds and even though I don't hunt them I would be happy to go with the kids if they take that interest and don't see where there should be a need for me to have to buy a duck/goose stamp to mentor. Rhino
I hear ya on the state/federal regs William...just don't agree with some of them when it comes to being a mentor to a youth or novice hunter. I can get completely geared up and go in the field with a video camera (no weapon) & film turkeys without a hunting license as long as I'm by myself. If I go in the field (without a weapon) & do the same think but also have a youth, novice hunter, heck any hunter with me that has a weapon, I have to have my licence. hoytshooter09
Here in Missouri u have to have a filled or unfilled tag to be with a youth hunter or another hunter even if u don't plan on having a gun or shoot anything always thought that was a weird rule. But most the time the youth season is a week before the regular seasons so you are just getting your tags earlier.
wtnhunt
For deer and turkey a mentor can take a youth during the youth hunt here, our current handbook specifies that person taking the youth must be a non hunting adult over 21 years of age. Our youth hunt is for youngsters aged 6 to 16. No special stamps required. When you get your big game gun license here it gets you your license for turkey and deer. That goes on sale before the turkey season opens each year. Waterfowl stamp last time around here cost $15. My kids are not required to have any license so long as they hunt our farm. I bought my son his lifetime under 3 years of age for $200, all he will ever have to pay for will be special hunts and for waterfowl stamps. elkoholic
I am the only yes vote and here's why. The youth hunter does not have to buy a federal duck stamp (not required until age 16) and money from the sale of duck stamps (supposedly 98 cents per dollar) goes towards purchasing and conserving wetlands. Wetlands, as you know, benefit more than just waterfowl. You do not have to be a hunter to purchase a duck stamp and I consider it to be a good investment in the future. A lot of people, including hunters, talk a good line, but when it comes to walking the line and putting their money (or any other resource) where their mouth is, nothing happens. It does no good to be a mentor if there is no place to mentor. Seriously, there should be no debate here, just do the right thing.
Ravin R10 man
I voted Yes...if the guy is a mentor, he is prob. a duck hunter too. I usually buy the Duck Stamp every year, in case I go Goose hunting, or Duck hunting, even though most years, we have no ducks to speak of.
