wtnhunt
Good luck and have a safe trip Tim. Things looking poor for turkeys here this spring, just don't have enough land to get real serious about turkey hunting. Was covered up in them during deer season, last day I hunted during deer season had 7 longbeards walk within probably 10 yards of my stand when I was at the bottom of the ladder about to climb up. No sign of them now, but hearing a few a long ways off in the bottom. Come June they will be in our driveway cutting across our cow pasture, happens every year. Rhino
Well Tim...since you asked...made my 1st turkey hunt of the season this morning. Other obligations and weather has delayed the start to my turkey season (opened 3/14 here). Got close enough to a gobbler to hear him drumming this morning. He had a BIG flock of hens with him. Saw 8 of his hens...he had more hens by him I couldn't see but I sure could hear them. They went down the side of a real steep ridge we were all on. They're not supposed to do that! More proof turkeys can't read. Later I saw 4 male turkeys in a 65 ac. field behind weeds. Couldn't tell if they were jakes or gobblers but 1 gobbled once. Tried coaxing them in but deer spooked them off. Threw in the towel ~10:30 and while driving out in my Ranger EV I drove up on 3 gobblers in the road within 100 yards of where I started listening at dawn...heard nothing anywhere close to there. If I was an ambush hunter I could have jumped out & bagged one of them. Not my style so I just glassed them walking off at ~25 to 30 yards. Gotta admit...the ambush thought crossed my mind though. Trialing bird had a thick beard. I believe tomorrow morning will be round 2. I'll let you know how it goes.

Rhino
Thanks Bob. At least you are able to get out & walk some Tim. Round 2...POOR. Muggy this morning with temps in the 60's. Heard one bird burning his gobble up on the roost. Only problem...about 250 yards S of our line. He shut down when his feet hit the ground. I cruised around listening till 9:30 and never heard another bird. Didn't see any either. I'll hit the woods again Saturday after the cold front moves through. dbHunterNY
have been too busy to even think much about turkey hunting. going to try and get out this weekend to scout some and setup a small plot, dusting, and strutting area or two. will spots they've used in the past i'll just make a little nicer and more welcoming. i'll get out the turkey taking implements and make sure everything still is good to go. going to try and shoot the recurve throughout this month to get warmed up before then. tall order though and might have to bring a gun just because. still chilly with snow on the ground where the sun can't get as much so we'll see.
