2nd Annual Realtree forum turkey hunt

Yep...mother nature was not kind to us at all. Rain essentially ruined 2 morning hunts. Thursday afternoon shortly after I arrived, I hit the woods...weather was good. I heard 1 bird gobbling on my way in so I set up on the edge of a field SW of him. Never kheard him again but one cranked up close behind me in the timber. Had him gobbling pretty good till 10 jakes came through me going to the gobbling bird. The gobbler spent the rest of the time keeping the jakes off his hens & never gobbled again. Saw him at ~80 yards with his 3 hens & the jakes giving him a workout trying to cut in on the action. They all eventually went E...fun show...close but no cigar.

1st morning...bad weather...heard 2 birds gobble a total of 4 times on the roost sitting in the same spot I was at the prior afternoon. Also the same spot where I killed 2 gobblers last year. Saw one gobbler pitch down into the field ~125 yards away. He headed toward the other birds that had gobbled in the timber to the N. Rest of the morning was spent watching hens & calling them in with no more gobbler seen or heard. That afternoon I decided to stick to the woods since the gobblers appeared to be doing that. Called in a silent bird...twice to ~30 to 35 yards at ~4:00. All I could see of him was from a few inches below his red waddles to the top of his bright red head. With no clue if he was a jake or a gobbler for sure, I passed on pulling the trigger. Can't play catch & release with turkeys. About 5:25 a bird finally gobbled, worked him till 6:45 when he decided to head W. Moved in to close the distance and got a good look at him out of range. Turned out to be the bird Adam warned me about in the area that's a mature gobbler with NO beard. Big bird though.

2nd morning was a complete rain out with thunderstorms in the area. Went out after lunch when the rain quit ~1:30. Couldn't get too the field I had been on the prior day since the creek was way too high now. Set up where the gobbler had passed through yesterday near the edge of the S field. Didn't hear a bird gobble. Saw 1 hen on the move through the timber. Threw in the towel at 7:00.

3rd morning we woke to a light rain. Rained most of that evening too. Rain quit around daylight. Hit the woods & heard nothing. Saw a couple of soaked hens in the field across the swollen creek I couldn't cross by themselves. Tried to raise a bird till ~9:00 then threw in the towel. I left the lodge around 10:00 to drive to MO.

All in all had a good time. Could have shot a bird if I didn't care if it was a jake or a gobbler. With all the jakes everyone was seeing it should be an outstanding hunt next year. Looking forward to next year in Kansas now.

Just got back home. It was hard hunting, weather was bad. My better half missed a gobbler. Saw birds everyday. I'm already signed up for next year. I gave Adam the $ before I left KS.

Adam did his job, the birds were there, mother nature decided that we needed about 3 " of rain in 3 days.

Al, good luck on those Mizzu gobblers. I'm headed out for a merriams on Saturday.
