.....and it has been vaccinated against Lyme disease......

Not a hunting dog other than the occasional unlucky groundhog. But we lost our 6 year old Rott last night to Lyme disease. No telltale signs of Lyme. Both we AND the vet mistook this as a severe and persistent case of roundworms. Made no sense to suspect Lyme because of the vaccination.........

Last night after having lost over 30 lbs. Crosby died of kidney failure caused by advanced Lyme disease.

I don't know what the answer is. Maybe a blood test at each annual vet checkup whether you think you need it or not........ I don't know. Just want to make others aware that even AFTER the Lyme vaccination, your dog IS NOT still 100% safe.

sorry to hear that Don, ticks, not sure what their purpose is...pulled 8 off me Sat. after scouting for Blueberries!

Last three dogs we had, had to be put down, tough thing to have done. Not fun losing a pet. Tough to diagnose it in humans sometimes, let alone a dog.

mmm, reckin I said my piece, alright then, mmm

Sorry to hear about losing Crosby.

Thanks the heads up Don.

Not to take away here but don't let a vet write off your family pet without first checking all your options. Our stray we took in was in kidney failure due to heartworms. After about $500 at the local vets, he wrote her off said she was in too bad of shape for the treatment. She was in very poor shape, lost a significant amount of weight and would not eat. We tried meds to get her kidney function better but saw only further decline. My youngest daughter was heartbroken. A little research online and suggestions for some herbal remedies had me check a local place that sold the stuff. When i asked the vet he said the stuff won't work but it is your money to waste. Lady at the herb place put the dog on a kidney activator and a few others for heart health and some stuff that would get rid of the worms and the stuff actually worked. Dog has been heartworm free for going on i think almost 4 years now. Vet when we took the dog back was in disbelief. He got the names of all of what we gave the dog to research for himself. In the long run we spent a lot of time but far less money than the treatment the vet would have given and that vet treatment itself was iffy.

This same dog got bit inside her mouth by a water moccasin back around Easter, she is one heck of a snake killer, that one got her though. Had concerns with her hw history but she made it ok after some steroids and antibiotics from the vets office.

Thanks everyone for the sympathies.

But that was not really the reason for the post. If what we went through can be a learning experience to keep one family from losing a dog to Lyme, then the post was worth it.

Just keep your eye on your dog's health and ALWAYS suspect that any downturn in your dog COULD be Lyme. The blood test is WAY cheaper than the heartache of your kids losing their pet.
