Shaun_300
Anyone else have this crap on their property or area? Noticed it on our property, only this one plant so far. It's some REALLY nasty stuff apparently. Gives off awful rashes/burns like poison ivy but a LOT worse. It's quite a problem here in eastern Ontario. Spreading like wildfire. wtnhunt
Pretty sure we have it growing in the bottom here, got something that looks like it anyway. Been seeing what looks like giant hogweed here too, but it is not supposed to be here. Guessing birds can distribute some of this stuff. Probably need to hit it with a hot mix of glyphosate and 2 4 d.
Turkeygirl
All over here! I got into it last year, still have marks from it. UV light reacts with juice from the plant. My sister got into it this year. The blister rash hurts. I heard it is not native, came over from Europe.
Rhino
There's a little of it around our club in MS...more of it scattered around our place in MO than here though.
VermontHunter
Wild Parsnip and Giant Hog Weed are just plain nasty and can ruin your summer in a big way. If you com in contact with the stuff immediate wash with soap vigorously and thoroughly. This stuff is super hardy and hard to get rid of ... RangerClay
It was just a plant or two about here three years ago, now it's everywhere aaaand thick. Most people don't know what it is.
Shaun_300
Yeah I know Joe, it looks very much like goldenrod which is also all over. Gotta be super careful where you're walking. They are VERY strict when it comes to pesticide use here in Ontario. Need to have special licences and permits etc. It's all over the ditches along the roads and highways so when they mow it just blows it everywhere and spreads like wildfire. wtnhunt
What is it? I see a plant and that it gives a rash. Something like poisen ivy? Yep, the plant in the pic above with the yellow flowers. Wild parsnip is not a native plant in this country. Not personally gotten into that I can be sure of but the dermatitis it causes is said to be as bad if not worse than poison oak and ivy. Not sure why, but poison oak around here seems to be worse too.
arrow32
Well hope to never get into anything like that then. I've had poisen ivy all some so far. I have gotten it and as I'm getting rid of it I end up getting it again
Shaun_300
I've never seen poison oak or poison sumac. We do have poison ivy though, I've never had it but it's nasty. Apparently this wild parsnip is much worse. If it gets in your eyes you could go blind very easily. Like Ruth said it's the sap/juice in the plant. When the sun hits it, it reacts and causes a horrible rash. The rash can affect you and come back for up to 3 or 4 years after you touch it. The root is like a parsnip, you can eat it. Wouldn't catch me trying it though lol.
