Is premium ammo worth the extra $$$

The other day coming from work just so happened to be going thru Lloydminster, stopped at Profit River. Shopping around for a factory load for a modern rifle instead of weaker military rifles seen some Norma ammo in my caliber reluctantly bought a box thinking if it's bad i will have brass second to none, as it turns out the 156 oryx pokes 1 hole groups @ 100 yds. After trying about 6 different brands of ammo finally found something that shoots to my expectations, not knocking any N.A factory ammo ,but Accubonds didn't do this, heck Berger was about the same as accubonds, Lapua factory ammo came close but no cigar. Just about ready to trade for one of Roy's chamberings then this happens just figured that other fellow hunters would like to know about this if they are having accuracy problems, i know @ $8.00 per box more i was sceptical but it paid off. thinking about cleaning their stock in that caliber now will these oryx do their job.

Dunno, not really had much experience with high end factory loads. Most the deer i have killed with rifle been shot with core lokts. Ironically the only deer i have lost with rifle was shot with a more expensive round, i switched back to the core lokts.

Have mid range bullets i have hand loaded, if i ever take a shot on one with a rifle again we will see how they do.

In my case NO---I shoot a 30/06. Plain Jane 180 grain "Core-lokts" or "Power Points" kill just fine. I use them on everything---moose, elk. mtn lion, deer, bighorn sheep, mtn goats, oryx, black bear and antelope.

I mainly used .300 WSM for the past 10 years for deer hunting and have had the best luck with Winchester Power Point 180gr. I bought a box of Remington Premier Accutip 180gr, killed one deer with it. Sure it killed it, but man did it make a mess. It looked like a grenade went off inside that deer. Same results with the Winchester supreme ballistic tips. So they went back on the cabinet and currently have 3 loaded in the clip ready to do some groundhog explosions if they give me the opportunity. Just ruined too much meat. The power points do the job perfectly. Killed quite a few deer with that load and it's a much cleaner job and most have dropped in their tracks.

Bought a 7mm-08 that I will use this year, wanted something with a little less "umph" but still in the .28-.30 cal range. I've only shot the 140gr Power points out of it so far and it shoots awesome groups. Picked up 2 boxes of Hornady American Whitetail 139gr soft points at Bass Pro when I was in Toronto. Haven't tried those yet. Once I get enough brass I will start handloading that caliber.

It would seem in Huck's case the premium ammo IS worth the extra expense.

Shot a coyote in the shoulder with this Norma ammo @ 200 yds, golf ball entrance, small grapefruit exit, nice wound channel by gosh.

Hornady eld x perform pretty well.  Loading 178 grain for 308.  Good groups and performance on first deer i shot with them resulted with deer dead in it's tracks.  Shattered near shoulder and recovered 78 grains of lead in skin on off side. Also shot yote with same load, left quite an exit. 

Have some 145 grain 270 eld x rounds loaded and acceptable groups but yet to shoot a deer with them.  

I may move on to the 6mm eld x for the 243 as well, but I have about 400 of the interlocks in 6mm.  

Don't see me ever buying anymore factory ammo for deer hunting or other hunting rounds.

I believe in good ammo, but it really depends on your wallet if you are planning to get premium ones.
