Another article  from www.gohunt.com/   on FB   about the efforts  to bail & lure  deer and elk away  from Highway 50 around Gunnison due  to deep snows. Gunnison has received 145% more snow than usual and with freezing  made it difficult to find food under the snow.  Perhaps... this is what was posted earlier.  HH

I  understand  wtnhunt,  it is scenic  country,  first time I saw  it I was so impressed,  all of  Ohio Pass and Kebler Pass  is beautiful.  The San Juan and Mount Sneffels around  Telluride and Ridgeway are as scenic,  maybe  even  more.  I hope  in time  you will be able  to enjoy  Colo  again.

Been to Colorado when I was a kid quite a long time ago, but have never hunted there.

Hunted in Wyoming back in 2010 with my oldest daughter.  Our youngest is almost 6, get him to about 12 or so and hopefully the wife and I will be doing some traveling and hunting.

wtnhunt:   Wyoming is beautiful also  Was in the Jackson, Dubois, Pinedale area in 2007,  saw lots of big game while  on vacation. Visited GTNP and Yellowstone for 2 weeks in late Sept  early Oct 2007.  Saw 10 different moose  in Jackson  Hole area and Pinedale area.  Antelope outside Dubois,   and all the  big game  in YNP,  except cougar.  Seeing  & photographing a grizzly  was my special time.  As they say  GO  West... young  man !    I hope  you enjoy time with your  son and wife  out  west in time.   HH

This one comment thread from saddlesore,  one of the elk guru's on  24hour campfire.com  on Unit 54 elk hunting.  Maybe think twice on hunting Unit 54 this season.  With the bad winter of 2016-2017 and the herd being at objective level by Colo FWP and with unlimited OTC  elk tags issued this year in 2nd and 3rd season,  elk kills may be disappointing.  HH

From summitpost.org/   Photos    There are 3 pages of photos from the Flat Tops Wilderness area 73 total I believe  I am offering  as on Pg 1  Charlie had suggested perhaps a hunt in the Flat Tops  White River National Forest  might intrigue some folks.  Well...  here are photos from the area for your viewing.  Anyone have any experience hunting here ?  At one time...  this location held the largest elk herd in Colorado, now I believe it is perhaps 2nd or 3rd largest elk herd.  With heavy snows the elk migrate out of the high area into lower elevations.  If you know the migration routes when that happens,  heavy snowfall,   you can see hundreds of elk.  Click the photos in the gallery to see them larger  with some explanation of the area. This area usually has a large population of hunters,  but many elk also.

Found a thread that  might be an eye opener for Unit 54 in the West Elk Wilderness.  It is pretty disappointing for hunting results.  Sure some folks score  but on a general consensus... it is crowded, even in the Wilderness area.  Please read through the thread and form your own opinon.

http://forums.bowsite.com/tf/bgforums/thread.cfm?forum=5&threadid=393825#3927511   Now... a lot of the fellows were archery hunting, but many also rifle hunted the area in the past.  Perhaps  Units 53, 63,  and 521  are not so crowded,  but I imagine they have lots of hunters also.  Respectfullly submitted.    HH  Richard

PS  scroll up to the beginning of the thread.
