elkoholic
First elk hunt of the season and I think grouse hunting would have been a better idea. Saw a couple dozen while hunting and another couple of dozen on the drive home. If arrows weren't so expensive I might have shot a few. On the drive home. I did get to hunt in a little bit of snow, but a big bull elk would have improved this picture.
Shaun_300
Nice pics! Are those spruce grouse? Sharp-tailed? We only have Ruffed grouse around here, never seen any other ones, I believe there are some in northern Ontario but not in this area. elkoholic
Yes, those are spruce grouse, sometimes called fool hens. There are times you have to practically kick them to get them to move. We also have ruffed grouse which are also on the "tame" side up in the mountains where they do not see many people. As for the snow, it was mostly above 6,000 feet and along with the rain at lower elevations was a welcome weather change to help put a damper on the multiple fires we have burning around here. Temperature was in the upper 20's that morning and I had high hopes the elk would be vocal, but even though there was some fresh signs (rubs and droppings) they weren't talking. So much land to hunt and if you can not locate them vocally it is tough hunting.
stevebeilgard
the elk should be in full rut within a week, and that snow will get them howling. good luck
