archerjg
I was lucky enough (after 8 years of trying) to get one of the 500 MD Black Bear licenses in the Bear license lottery. Looking for any tips on finding bears or what to look for. It is all state land with NO baiting allowed. Maryland's bear program is very strict and only 4 days long. It is only in two counties and about 4 hours away from where I live in MD. Have a couple of places that I was told to try, but I've never been on a bear hunt before. Most likely ground hunting the bears and most likely with a muzzleloader or slug gun. This is one of my once in a lifetime bucket list hunts and I don't want to leave any stone unturned to try and get a bear. Even if I don't get one it will be an awesome experience. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Archerjg

archerjg
Steve no baiting allowed in MD. Lol about the cops though. You can hunt over natural food sources, but no baiting. Archerjg

archerjg
Well we saw nothing except old sign and we hunted over multiple food sources (even an old apple orchard with claw marks all over the trees) and saw nothing. Found a lot of the bears that were taken were either from private land and several tickets were written by NRP for baiting. We were told by several friends up that way because we didn't bait was the reason we didn't see much of anything. We learned a lot and if we get the chance to go back my wife and I have some more information to go off of and we have a few more contacts that might be able to get us onto private land to reduce the damage that is being done to the crops. Overall an excellent time and walking through the mountains as they were changing to the fall colors was way better than being at work. Thank you all for the advice it was very much appreciated and put to good use. Archerjg

im your huckleberry
Can you use attractants? 1.Simmer honey in an old chunky soup tin with a whisperlite single burner. 2 . Look for oat field on the fringes public/private lands this is one of the bears favorite foods to get fat for hibernation
