Yesterday afternoon's hunt was entertaining but the temp was still warm...mid 70's. Saw 18 deer...1 buck...135 class 9 point...looked like a 3.5 year old buck. Not a shooter here. Had a young doe feeding ~25 yards from my stand when the buck appeared. He approached the doe in rutting posture only to have her scurry around a bit before settling back down. The next part of the attempted pursuit might be accident or a trick he tried to pull but here's what happened. He was ~50 yards from her with her keeping her eye on him. He turned away & put his head down to feed. The doe settled back down to feeding and was facing away from him. He finally turned, looked at her facing the other way and began to slowly stalk her. When he got to about 15 yards he couldn't stand it & went back into rutting posture (head low stretched out) picking up pace with his front hooves punching the ground. She wheeled around doing a 360...then ran out ~150 yards into cut corn leaving him standing there. I'm thinking...you dummy...you almost had her but you gave her a warning.

Getting closer to that magic time of the year. Rain moving in today...we need it...then cools off a lot for the weekend. I'll hunt an enclosed bow blind this afternoon. Never know what can happen but weather looks much better for the weekend. Good luck to everyone else hitting the woods.

Rained on & off here in MO from about 10:00 till 2:00...mostly light rain. Then it went to on & off light mist till ~4:00 but the temp was still in the upper 60's. Saw 17 deer yesterday afternoon hunting the edge of a cut corn field. 4 were 1.5 year old bucks...the rest does & fawns. Still warm this morning (60) but supposed to cool down today and tonight down to ~40. Very windy this morning. Heading out to a stand in a bit.

Yesterday morning was uneventful...saw 3 does & fawns...on & off misty rain. My son (Bailey) shot a doe...apparently he didn't hit her as good as he said. We jumped her 2 hours later during the recovery attempt...she headed toward the stand I hunted yesterday afternoon. Yesterday afternoon with cooler temps deer started moving early in the timber. The last hour of the hunt was non-stop action! Young bucks pushing does around...2 older bucks too...a 3.5 year old 10 point (130 class) & a mature shooter 8 point (140's). In all saw 29 deer...11 bucks. Getting close to magic time! When the 10 point made his 2nd pass S of the stand I noticed him nudging something on the ground at ~70 yards. Glassed him & yep...he's nudging the doe Bailey shot that morning. She was real sick but not dead yet...wouldn't get up. Opted to let her lay & recover her this morning since it got cold last night. Sending Bailey to that stand to hunt & drag his doe out after the hunt.

Went out yesterday morning me and dad. Im not sure what the deal was but it was a very slow morning with no movement. Saw 2 deer before daylight could make out there bodies but nothing else not enough light yet. Hope to be back out here next week. Been a little warm here this past week. Hope the weather gets better.

Only hunt I made this weekend was Saturday night. Supposed to be only 20% chance of rain but it poured for the final two hours of the evening. I had two inches of water in my boots. LOL

I head for Kansas next Sunday. Hope to put some more points on the board soon.

Got to full draw on a nice doe last night, but she came straight at me, then veered to my right as she got broadside at 15 yards. As I was making sure my bottom cam wouldn't hit my stand, and wrestling with my safety harness and a little branch in front of me, she walked through my lane. I had another shooting lane as she passed me, but to my right. Had I been a lefty, I'd be eating backstrap for dinner tonight. :D

Buddy I was hunting with (Hardwood HD) saw 15, with 2 shooter bucks. He already has a doe tagged, so he passed on quite a few deer last night.

Oh well, back at it tonight.

Missed a chance at a small doe last night. She scooted through my window too quick. Hour later a nice 120-ish 8 pt cruised by. Got to full draw on him, but couldn't get the pin on him before he was out of the first window, then he presented a poor quartering away angle on the next window. Typical of a cruising buck, he was constantly changing angles and never stopped.

I'm thinking I'm way out of practice on preparing for a shot, 2 nights in a row, I had deer in range, but wasn't prepared in enough time to shoot. Definitely out of practice in that area. In hindsight, I don't think I would be happy with that buck last night if I had shot him. Just not quite what I wanted to shoot.

Got out Saturday and Sunday evening. Saturday had a little 7 pt skipper walk in and turn right in front of me, passed up a shot on him. Right at last light, the same doe that I described in my previous post on October 26th came in, same place. She was broadside at 25 yards, but I didn't shoot because I wasn't 100% it was a doe. As she got closer she was on a path to walk right in front of me at 15 yards. Right before she was about to walk in front of me, she turned left and walked right to the base of my tree again offering no ethical shot. As she walked away I drew on her, but she walked straight away and I was having trouble seeing through my peep at that point, which was fine because again, no shot.

It's getting personal with that doe. :D

Sunday is an easy post, I got skunked. Really warm weather here in Ohio. Close to 70 today and tomorrow, and I'm swamped at work.

Took the morning off in MO today...dense fog this morning. Got to MO last Thursday afternoon. Deer movement was real good till it warmed up Saturday. Friday afternoon was one of the most entertaining hunts I've ever had. Saw 8 chases...15 bucks...2 shooters (a big 9 & 160 class 10) both out of range. Since then it's been fairly slow, especially during the mornings. Saw a buck hunting the timber late yesterday afternoon. I got a short glimpse of him...looked mature but couldn't tell how many points he had. He was grunting & growling chasing a doe ~100 yards from me. Other than that seeing mainly young bucks and does...not many either. It looks like the weather gets better Friday & Saturday...maybe Thursday afternoon too.

Had a 135 class 9 point with a 10th point short kicker come by with a doe late yesterday afternoon. Not a shooter here in MO...3 year old. The doe allowed him to lick her back side 3 times. He attempted to mount her twice but she'd move forward. Appears we're close to breading phase here.

Got an email from Gene Wensel last night. He's experiencing the same slow action we're having since the warm weather started Saturday. He hunts ~50 miles NW of us in Iowa. Weather changes....finally...tomorrow. Front moves in tonight...rain is supposed to move in around 7:00 & rain till midnight. A lot cooler temps tomorrow & finally a wind change to the NW. Sick of this hot weather S wind mess. Fingers crossed we get some action before the front this afternoon. Heading to a stand soon this morning but I honestly don't expect anything different than we've been having in this warm weather. Can't kill them though if my head's on the pillow.

Saw a young 8 & a fawn before sunrise this morning...zip after that. Right now it's warm & very windy. With the crummy weather, I decided to take the afternoon off from sitting in a treestand. It would have to be a real big tree with this wind anyway. Going out to glass a large cut bean field area where I have several stand options back in the timber for W & NW winds. A front is moving through later tonight & the wind shifts to the W & NW for the next few days & gets a lot cooler. FINALLY...something besides some kind of dang S wind & T shirt weather. I may be spending most of the daylight hours in the woods starting tomorrow till I have to go back to MS.

Got back home to MS last night. Weather turned favorable the last 2 days I was in MO so I spent most of my time in a stand. Didn't see any shooters the last 2 days..just young bucks, a few does, & lots of fawns. Appears the peak rutting time was during the 6 days the weather was warm to hot. I believe they are in the breeding phase in NE Missouri now (aka lockdown). Bummer the 6 days of hot weather & S wind limited daylight movement. Hunting should be good again for a week or so after the breeding phase is over. I'm planning to be back in a stand Friday afternoon in MO and hunt through the end of the following week. After that, most of my hunting time will be spent in MS.

Congrats on a nice buck!!

The weather is starting to really cool down here this week hope it stays for the rest of the season. Was hoping to get out this past weekend to hunt but ended up having to work. On the other hand now I think I will be able to hunt pretty much all of the week of rifle season here so that makes me happy. I've not been able or had time to hardly bow hunt yet this year. Hoping after this month I will be able to get after it next month and do a little muzzle loader hunting as well.

I've been out here and there for a few days now, but not seeing any shooters. Too bad I don't live in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is where it's at!

You buy the tag and I'll put you on some Oklahoma Giants! Lol

Shot a nice 8 point in the shoulder this morning. Only got an inch of penetration and the buck walked off. He was chasing a doe so I hope he follows her back in the morning.
