wtnhunt
Only been out twice so far here. Don't have very high expectations for this year at this point, even though we had a couple good bucks make it through last year, not getting tc pics of but one I would really consider a shooter. Weather about to get much better after this front pushes through today, just hope I can figure out where I am gonna go with the 10+ mph north wind, most my north wind setups are better for gun hunting. Be back in a stand somewhere Friday morning hopefully, wish I could get out this afternoon but not gonna happen with the wife out of town for work. If I can get a little easterly shift in the wind I may be in a new setup for this year that I think will be a great stand. OK with any of those names here. wtnhunt
Just shot a good one!!! Guessing it didn't come from a petting zoo either. lol. Congratulations Pat, look forward to some pics and the story. Had a slip here this morning climbing down from about 8 ft off the ground, lifeline and my safety harness caught me in an awkward position. Twisted something in my shoulder in the process. hoosierhunter
This particular buck was very consistent with his daylight pattern, same time and direction more days than not during a full week. We have a really solid food plot with clover and brassicas out front and another brassica and bean plot to the east. I had sent my dad in after him twice and this was my second sit. I got in the stand right before 6 and actually had a fawn come out while I was climbing up. At 7:10 I had a smaller 8 come out from the area inspected the buck to come from. It was his running buddy so my hopes were high. About 5 minutes later I see another deer pop out. The first thing I saw was the big white circles around his eyes and I didn't have to see any more to know who he was. He surveyed the plot for about five minutes and made the 40 yard walk in without a care in the world. I watched him feed in front of me from 40-57 yards for 15 minutes. His buddy then decided to move into the big plot off to my right. He hit the trail at 30 yards and passed by perfect. I was getting situated to shoot and the smaller buck locked into me. Thankfully he was far enough east that the shooter couldn't see him. He knew something wasn't right and headed back north out of sight of the buck and fawns in the plot. My nerves were fried at this point wanting to take that 45 yard shot, but based in the trail camera I figured he would follow the same path as before and walk broadside at 30 yards. After another 5-10 minutes he decided to make his move. He paused to hit the scrape and turned his head away giving me enough time to stand up in the tripod and take the shot. I settled the 30 yard pin, started letting out my slow breath and squeezed the release. The arrow flew perfect and let out the hollow thud. He did a giant mule kick and ran about 100 yards before stopping and getting wobbly before disappearing behind the brush. I knew he was smoked and all the built up adrenaline of 4 years since my last now buck poured through me. I darn near tumbled out of the tripod trying to sit down. We have him about 30 minutes and went in after him. Upon going right to the last spot I saw him my heart skipped a beat when I found a bed. My immediate reaction was to back out, but my dad said just wait and go 5 more yards, he put out too much blood to go anywhere. 5 more yards the blood turned right behind some brush and there he laid!! My arrow took out both lungs and one blade perfectly split the bottom of his heart. He ended up being a main frame 6x4 with both brows split making him a 12 point. He grosses 141 5/8ths. The earliest I had previously killed a buck was Oct 29th. I shit the pics to WTN so I'm sure he will get some pics up soon. I'll be taking a little break until my other target buck or something new gets daylight active. He have several other mature deer, but it will have to be a real stud for me to kill another one. Now it's time to get dad on one of the shooters!! It's been 20+ years since he killed a buck and god willing this will be the year.

fly
Good for you Pat! You paid your dues last year and passed a lot (maybe this one). This year it paid off with an early season stud! Congratulations and good luck getting your dad on one! Congratulations on the doe as well.
hoosierhunter
Dang that's no good. At least the lifeline kept you from a free fall. A sprained shoulder is way better than broken legs or worse!
hoosierhunter
Thanks Frank! I've certainly let a few really nice young deer go in the last two years. A few of them bigger than this one. This guy is a deer I've passed the last two seasons waiting for him to reach 4.5. A ton of work went into this farm this year to make sure we killed him and maybe another one. Quite a feeling when it comes together!

wtnhunt
Dang that's no good. At least the lifeline kept you from a free fall. A sprained shoulder is way better than broken legs or worse! Yeah could have been worse. Bit sore today but otherwise ok i think. Saw a couple medium sized does this morning, bad shifting winds coming from north, ne one second nw the next. Had activities with the kids this afternoon. Hoping for less wind tomorrow. wtnhunt
Been a north or northeast wind here all weekend long, finally died down this evening. About 6:30 had a couple good sized does and two yearling does coming into the corner near our mineral site. Funny how the timing goes the thermacell butane cartridge burned out about this time and smelled like burnt hair, lead doe threw her nose up in the air, was wishing the wind was still blowing at that point, deer were directly to my east and no wind. Had the biggest doe at 20 yards and probably should have shot her. They got a little spooky and wandered on off but were casual. I could hear them but not see them. About a half dozen skeeters found there way to my face with one going in my ear, yep thermacell was not working. Reached up and wiped my ear and heard a blow, guess one of the does had come back. Oh well, least I saw some deer. Won't hunt that stand again for a while, wasn't really wanting to shoot a doe anyway, but that may well change if this one comes around my next set looking up. hoosierhunter
We have a saying around our farms. It's "Don't look up." Those big nannys have a memory like a darn elephant. I'm ok getting winded, but the minute they look up it turns into a bad day for them.

Shaun_300
Very nice buck Pat, congrats man! Been out a few times, haven't seen a thing yet! Well I shouldn't say that, saw 3 when I was walking out about 350 yards out in the field, it was right at last light, couldn't tell ya if they were does or bucks lol. I have my goals set high until here at home bow hunting until rifle season is over. Not shooting anything that isn't mount worthy. I really hope to see that big 8. Haven't seen him in a month or so. Coyotes are moving in and some of the deer are moving out. Oh well I'm not giving up, I'm in an area where there are a lot of good size bucks. hoosierhunter
Man there have been some giants hitting the ground early and I mean GIANTS! See Jim Thomes 190 NET typical on Drury. Rhinos buddy torching a near 180 and another guy I know hammering one over 200 inches in Iowa.
wtnhunt
Have not had a shooter on camera out of velvet here yet only seen a couple does. Sure thought corn coming out early would help but not seen any increase in activity around our property.
wtnhunt
Had oblivious does with 2 fawns pass by just out of range here this morning on the first sit of one of my favorite stands. Wouldn't have shot them anyway but was a nice mild and calm morning in the stand, was covered up in turkeys. Hoping this current forecast holds for early next week, should be a good wind for a stand i have not hunted yet.
hoosierhunter
Eventful week for me as the trespassers and Amish have been out in full force. I've ran two different people off two different properties and my buddy somehow faded a $5,000 offer for his 60 acre property(he doesn't pay) from the Amish. I about fell out of my chair when I heard the amount.
hoosierhunter
Here's comes the fall! Low of 32 this Saturday! This will get some mature deer on their feet, I'd be in the woods if this front is hitting you.
