Casey
Buddy shot a doe last night in the shoulder, we tracked her this morning to find her still alive. His scope was fogged up and missed to put the doe down. She hopped a 6 foot fence. Only time we found good blood is when she standing or bedded down. After she crossed the fence we never saw her again. I think she will live.
wtnhunt
Guess really depends whether it was broadside or an angle or if something screwy happened with a poor angle and the bullet deflected off somehow. Most shoulder shots i have skinned out got lung. Around here afraid she would be yote bait. They get on deer usually within a very short time sometimes inside an hour. Casey
the blood was pouring out when she seemed to be standing. He shot her last night with his .385. As we got closer to I told him to load up because the blood seemed to be getting fresher as we made our way. He said when he hit her that night, her left leg was just dangling. I figured he got lung too. Seemed like when she was running there was only a few drops. I believe we would have gotten to her but we decided to drive across the field to the other side instead of walking the blood trail straight out. The leaves and the ground seemed recently disturbed. I told him to load up his gun. I am going to take a guess that this slick head was a 170 pound doe. I believe she was quartering to him but I could be wrong. I believe she was quartering to him but I could be wrong. Sounds like a dead deer to me. No way a quartering to that goes into the shoulder does not get at least one lung unless it was some kind of really hard angle. I am still wondering how the deer i shot with the ml'er did not expire from the first hit. Hit above the shoulder a little forward on a broadside shot. I was on a ridge probably 40 ft higher than the deer and he was about 55 yards out. Considered posting a thread and pic before you posted this but didn't get to it yet. lol
hoosierhunter
Poor bullet expansion will let a deer go a long way. I watched a buddy double lung a broadside doe at 50 yards with a powerbelt. 3 hours later and several hundred yards we found her. Upon starting to field dress her she immediately started bleeding, I.E. She was technically still alive with a heart beat. Both lungs had holes through them but they were still inflated. One of the craziest things I've seen while hunting. I would have never believed it if I wasn't there to see it first hand.
Casey
yeah I believe she died once she laid down. After we jumped her up and she cleared the fence, we got back on her trail. Knowing she was being followed by us she wasn't going to stop. It seemed like she would only bleed when she was laying down or standing. I knew she was alive due to the fresh blood we were finding. wtnhunt
A smaller caliber bullet but the little buck my youngest daughter shot yesterday afternoon did not bleed from entry at all, matter of fact the only blood was what was draining out his mouth. Good thing he dropped within 30 or so yards. Only way i could find where he was hit was to reach inside the cavity. Will know more about that one when i skin it out. Those core lokts from the 243 usually do better than this. Don't think the bullet exited but was busted rib bone on exit side.
Casey
I'm out right now with a 20 gauge. Will bust through any shoulder with my rifled slug rounds.
stevebeilgard
i'm guessing a spire point bullet, which are garbage. i also prefer to shoot behind the shoulder, into the vitals. too much good meat gone in a shoulder shot. but then, it was most likely the fog
Ravin R10 man
My little bro took the only shot he was gonna get on a dandy ten at 48 yrds. 243 120 gr.Speer Spitzer boat tails,(HOT) reloads . quartering to he put the bullet right on the front edge of the shoulder and took out the lungs. When we got it skun and ready to process, the shoulder was nearly tore off! Bullet fragments made it to other side of body cavity, and had totally disentragated. Needless to say the buck dropped on the spot. Edited November 28, 2015 by Mathews XT Man
