elkoholic
It has been a few years since I shot a deer so this year I thought some fresh venison sounded like a good idea. The past couple of years the big mature bucks seem to be mostly nocturnal from September through late December so even though the hopes for a big buck were in the back of my mind I had lowered my expectations. This was an afternoon hunt in a driving rain storm which had begun as snow. With 3+ inches of wet snow it was an easy task to track down this buck. After cutting his tracks and deciding to see if I could catch up with him, the hunt was on. It culminated with less than an hour of light left about 1&1/2 miles later. Fortunately, the drag out was only about 1/2 mile and mostly downhill. Hunting Forest Service land here allows me to hunt like this, and is my preferred method. I live and hunt by the Jim Shockey motto; when you're wet, cold and tired, it's just getting started. Not my biggest, or smallest, buck but the hunt will be remembered as one of the best.
