Whitetail Hunting

Some yearlings will trickle in and unbred does are cycling a second time now.

Yep, about that time, post rut and going into secondary. Figure primary rut should have peaked around the 15th of November. Does that did not take or got missed should be cycling back in the coming weeks. Couple that with the young ones first time coming in, seeing some small does with clean white tarsals, they have not had a cycle yet. A slim chance around here with the pressure that a mature buck that has made it this late is gonna slip up and move during daylight, but there is a chance.

In MO we saw decent rutting action from about 10/30 through 11/20 during days when the weather was cool to cold. Unfortunately, most of that period of time the weather was unusually warm and rutting activity was mostly after dark during the warm weather days. We had more southerly winds during that period than anything else. What the heck happened to the predominant NW wind? Talked to a buddy of mine in Iowa...same thing. He saw a lot of deer while driving to the places he hunted before dawn and after dark going home. Deer movement for him was poor most of the time during daylight hours on those same warm weather days too.

Here in MS...well the primary rut hasn't kicked in yet. It usually is good during the 5 days or so on either side of Christmas. Hunted in MS from this past Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning for the 1st time since early Oct. I saw 13 bucks mostly feeding on acorns every day I hunted. No sign of bucks cruising here yet.

for whatever reason your activity kicked into high gear before us here in eastern NY. peak breeding was same and same as it's always been year after year. right about now the any second cycling doe or fawns that meet weight are getting attention. haven't been out enough lately to confirm but I'm sure it's going on. second rut is very hit or miss. if you're seeing stuff you will for a couple days or so. if not it'll pass like it wasn't even going on.

Wife witnessed some chasing here this afternoon. Three bucks one after the other hot on a good sized doe.

With the warm temps and a bit of frustration she didn't really want to go. Gave her a bit of encouragement and told her second rut should be kicking and the scout look forecast had today as "best" that one of us needed to be in a stand. I will not give away her story. ;)
