rhine16
I had major plans for this season. Had more shooter bucks on cams than I'd ever had, had an early season trip to KY and a return rut trip planned, and thought I would be able to put the stand time in for a big season. Started it off on KY public ground on September 5 with my 14 year old brother. We had a blast on that 3 day weekend, saw several deer from the stand including some young velvet bucks. We each had multiple does in bow range but never loosed an arrow. Here's a pic of him as we walked out on the first morning. A few days before our MS season opener, I went in for what I thought was a 9 month checkup from my ACl surgery in January. I received a hard punch in the gut when the Dr. told me that he thought we should go ahead and replace my meniscus. I knew it was torn and that we were monitoring it, but I had no clue that that surgery was coming so soon. On October 30th we did that surgery. 6 looooong weeks after, I was able to begin partial weight bearing. December 19th would be my first day that I was cleared to walk in the woods. I was supposed to be on the ground only and rifle hunting, but a good friend of mine promised me that he could put me on a shooter if I could drag my climber up a tree. I did, and he was correct. The 16th deer that came through my setup that morning was an 125" 8 point. I shot just over the deer at 40 yards. Between being disheartened over that miss, the warm weather, and all of my hunting buddies wanting to duck hunt(4 of 5 had deer at that the taxidermist by New Years so I guess that makes it easier to stop chasing deer), I've only been back up the tree on a morning hunt with my bow twice. When the sun rose on 1/18 however, I was finally back in on my main farm with my bow hoping for a little secondary rut action. A few minutes after 7, I heard a deer making its way down the ridge toward my setup. At 40 yards the deer worked a rub and then a scrape. With its head in the licking branch I realized I was looking at a mature deer and began prepping for the shot. I sent an arrow into him at 15 yards and it was all over after about a 100 yard escape run. First 4+ year old buck I've been able to put all together on with my bow. Its been a long time coming [wink]

Rhino
Congratulations rhine! Great MS bow buck! Hate to hear you had to go through the surgery & recovery this season. Hope that's the last time. BTW...state wildlife commission shut our season down at the end the day Sunday. Won't have any chance for 2nd estrus rutting activity this year. Can't complain...had a fun time anyway.
