Hoytman66
I have been hearing and reading about mineral plots. What are you take on them? Any experience using them? Construction? Thanks! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
wtnhunt
Mineral sites? Have used minerals for several years. Pretty easy to establish. Work better in areas where there are mineral deficiencies in your soil and where other people may not also be using them, the deer will use the minerals more in those areas where they are not getting them elsewhere. Our main site has been on the edge of a clover plot and an inside corner of the woods, with water source less than a quarter mile away. Think I started ours with the old deer cain that had to be mixed in a bucket. Have used everything from plain red trace blocks to loose bagged minerals, to trophy rocks and all do work here. I have used a few other sites on our property but maintain the primary one year after year.

Rhino
Been making mineral sites for many years. As a general rule of thumb the recommended number of mineral sites is about 1 for each 150 ac. of land you control. They are utilized mostly during the warmer months but I do see utilization of our mineral sites in October and during early spring too. Biologist recommend not using a mineral mixture that contains more than 30% salt. The salt is the attractant but a high concentration of salt is not good for deer. Minerals themselves are bitter to taste so the mixture of salt is what makes deer take in the minerals. A bonus is mineral sites are an excellent choice for setting game cams when bucks are in their antler growing stage. I usually start running cams on them around mid July since by then the bucks have had enough antler growth to show a good indication of what they'll have come fall. Used to run one year round on the minerals here. With a new neighbor on the side closest to our minerals the activity has been down. I pulled that camera back in the winter and have not put it back out yet. Boys father told me they were gonna be logging his woods, might have a significant impact on that site and on our hunting since deer stage those woods in the afternoons before hitting our field.
