VermontHunter
I had a very busy Turkey season this year. Friday 5/6 the Gobblers just weren't playing nice at all, as soon as they hit the ground they would hen up and head off in the opposite direction, go figure huh ?? ... lol. Well at about 10:00 am I have a groups of hens not liking my hen decoys and calling so they work their way to me and my setup, I notice one with a short beard and I decide why not she seems to be a good size, she gets to about 25yrds. and I let the M887 do it's thing and she does the flopping wing dance for me .. She weighed in at 16.5 lbs no spurs and a 3/4" beard. My nephew Dallas calls me that night asking if I would take him on his very first turkey hunt ( very first hunt of any kind I should say ). I told him I absolutely would, but I wouldn't be able to take him until Sunday 5/8 which he was good with . So he meets me at my house at 4:00 am and we head to the farm. Had a friend of mine show up as well, I had Dallas in the blind with me and my friend went about 50 yrds. down from us and sat. It wasn't long and the action started just before daylight (let the Gobbler music begin), we had them gobbling from almost every direction. It was great to see the excitement on my nephews face, it took awhile to get them to commit to the field and the decoys, but with a little calling I got 4 nice jakes to commit and they came in on a string, I got my nephew settled in on them and I then got my shotgun settled in. I let him know which one to settle on, and I picked one out for myself . When they were in range ( 25-30 yrds ) I did the countdown from 3 and we let loose. ( I made one boo-boo and made the mistake of not waiting for them to separate abit before give the go ahead) My nephew knocks 2 down with a single shot and I knocked one down and winged the 4th. one with some stray load. Luckily the bird was so confused it headed right smack into my buddy's spot and he flops that one lucky for me .. PHEW After collecting the birds for a photo op for my nephew, we noticed one of the Jakes my nephew took had a double beard. The birds ranged between 15-18 lbs. Dang, I feel good what a great morning it was, I got to call in birds for my nephews very first ever hunt, I got a bird as well as my buddy ...
