daniel72
I'm going out this weekend to buy new arrows and broad heads and it has me wondering what's the best broad head out there on the market? I normally shoot fixed ones but are mechanical ones better? I need help
stealthman
It's really your own personal preference. I shoot fixed ones because it's less moving parts, you can buy 12 of them and all 12 can be used as a practice broad head. I use trophy taker broad heads and never had an issue with them. I have nothing against mechanical broad heads, I just feel better deep down in my heart with fixed.
daniel72
That's the reason why I use fixed because I'm always afraid something would break if I went to mechanical broad heads. I was at dicks a couple weeks ago and saw some redneck brand ones anyone ever heard of them?
Rhino
I've used fixed blade broadheads for a long time on deer size game or bigger game...namely Montec G5's. Been using them for years. No concerns about having to replace blades either since they are a 1 piece broadhead. Just sharpen them after use, over & over again (as long as the point doesn't hit something like a rock). Also a bonus is, with my bows Montec G5's fly the same as my field points. I've used some other fixed blade broadheads in the past that didn't fly like my field points. Some were considerably different. My personal beef with mechanicals is, 1) the blades a thinner and can break on impact with bone, 2) if you don't get a pass through they can close while in the game losing the ability to cause additional tissue damage like fixed blades will do, 3) concerns that one or more blades could fail to open, and 4) I believe I can get better penetration using cut on contact fixed blade broadheads. That's my $0.02. Have I tried mechanicals before? Yes, with poor penetration results compared to fixed blades, especially when hitting bone. What's the positives using mechanicals? Well...they fly like field points.
ODH
Hard to go wrong with Muzzys. I've never been disappointed with them
fly
I prefer a cut on contact tip. I started with fixed, went to mechanical, then back to fixed. This year I'm trying A hybrid, Bloodsport - gravediggers. Cut on contact tip, 1 inch diameter fixed with 13/4 mechanical. I'm hoping they give me the penetration of a fixed with the blood trail and accuracy of a mechanical.
