Prep Time!

It's that time of the year again to prepare for bow season...if you haven't already started. You may have seen in Martin's post I started in MO several weeks ago. My buddy and I, along with another friend of ours worked for a week at our place in MO getting things ready there. We spent 5 1/2 days just working on stands. All total we have 43 treestands and 5 blinds ready to hunt in MO. That may sound like we're way over the top in number of stands but we do have 1,400 ac. with about 1/2 of that in timber. Most of the rest is crop fields. We've continued to fine tune our sets each year for bowhunting so looking forward to hunting a few new spots along with some short distance adjustments to several more stands. Due to our hunt in Africa in July, we got a late start setting the cams out in MO. Plan to check them for the 1st time during my next short trip there in 2 weeks. The following week we'll head back to kick off the season that opens on 9/15. Fingers crossed a cool front moves in around the time we plan to go.

Spent a weekend with a young buddy in MS getting 12 stands ready for bowseason here (6 of his & 6 of mine). Back in Feb. & March we did some post season scouting fine tuning stands and setting new stand spots here in MS. We also trimmed lanes, etc. so it would be quicker & easier to get them ready when final prep tie arrived.. Not to mention less effort while it's still HOT here. Ran the cams I have here once so far but no nice mature bucks yet. We have a camp work weekend scheduled for Labor Day weekend so I'll be there to get some more chores done. Bowseason doesn't open in MS until 10/1.

Started practice sessions long before we left for Africa on 7/3 so I've just been shooting a dozen or so arrows about 3 times a week since returning to stay in form.

How about the rest of you?

Dunno yet here Al, too much going on and been pretty warm. I will probably pull my hang on stands out of the garage this weekend, problem is i have no idea if i am gonna hang them or where if i do. I need to get a couple more cameras out.

I know i need to clean wasp nests from a few permanent stands and blinds, not looking forward to that. Permanent gun stands should not need much, maybe some minor trimming.

Went to KY last week. We have about a dozen stands up on 110 acres. Most wooded with about 5 acres in food plots. Put beans in this past spring along with an electric fence to keep the deer from eating them before they grow. It worked great - have 5 ft bean plants. We took down the fence and got the stands all ready to go. Here in IL I keep one camera out and will check it sometime this week. Will also make some minor adjustments to a coupe stands I have up. I shot today for the first time. 20 shots at 20 yards: 100% in deer kill zone. 20 shots at 30 yards: 85% in kill zone and at 40 yards only 30%. I have some work to do if I want to expand my range to 40 yards.

Made a short trip to the MS club yesterday morning to run cams and get another stand ready for bow season. Got plenty of pics of these 2 bucks on a cam that's set ~20 yards from one of my stands. Still a month to go before the MS opener but for now, these 2 guys are regulars showing up there.

To date all Ive done is install an electric hoist with remote for skinning, and getting carcus up to the rail & rolling hooks. on the wailk in cooler. put a new roof on main cooler that extends back from the overhang roof I made last year out over the rail where the winch is mounted under. Now it is one complete roof front to back. soon as I get tin on I will take pics

I haven't done much, gotta get my rear end in gear! Haven't brought the bow out of the case since last year. Should get some more arrows and possibly restring it before the end of the month. Just have a few limbs to trim around the stand. Sat in it the other day and sniped some tree rats with the HMR. They are over run back there!

Did a little scouting on some public land and brought along the shotgun for some tree rats myself. 4 in total just walking around and sitting a little. Saw a doe and yearling as well. Other than that, shooting my bow and waiting for the start of the season. Plan on hanging two stands next week.

Speaking of Tree rats, here's my first archery kill 6 years ago walking to the stand!

season kicks off oct 1st here in NY. doing a lot for an 11,000+ acre QDM co-op I help run. I do a whole lot prep for me. I've got some cameras out now though, checked one of my old stand locations that has the #1 hit list buck in the area. have got some others that are ready to go, but based on real time scouting I always throw up a few others to hunt very soon after. definitely forces me to be efficient with my time.
