MUDRUNNER
Good luck with the rifle bbarcheryhunter! I hunted Thanksgiving morning until 11 and only seen one little spike. Yesterday afternoon I took my daughter out with her crossbow, but we never seen a deer. My season is starting to wind down pretty quick. This weekend is our second gun season, but I don't have another tag for that. The following weekend I am going to Minnesota for a buddies wedding, so my days in the woods are numbered. MUDRUNNER
Anyone still going at it? I was in Minnesota all weekend for a wedding, so haven't been in the woods for a while now. Hopefully I can get out a little Christmas weekend.
TheHawkeyeState
It's 2nd shotgun season here, so I've been out the last two days. I've been seeing deer, but nothing I have wanted to take. Actually have seen a good amount of deer which is surprising this time of year on public ground. Going out this afternoon with my little sister. She has never been deer hunting and is just going to sit with me. May put one down tonight we will see. TheHawkeyeState
Story time. Iowa 2nd shotgun season. It was about 15 minutes before legal shooting time was over and three deer appeared about 70 yards in front of me. It was getting dark and one stepped out in an opening. I saw antlers and had to decide pretty quick if I was going to shoot or not. I decided to pull the trigger on the ole smoke pole. After the shot I watched him run off aways and thought I saw him veer to the side and go down. I was sitting in a fallen down tree, and gathered up my things. By the time I got to the area I shot him it was pretty dark. I forgot my good flashlight in the truck which was about a 1.5 mile walk away. So I wandered around a bit looking for blood in the snow with my not so bright head lamp. Meanwhile I was talking to my friend on the phone asking him to come help me and bring a spot light. After not finding the spot I shot him I tried looking where I thought he went down. Now it was completely dark. I was just about to give up and go meet my friend and continue the seach when I had better light, but by chance I stumbled across some hair. Once I found the hair I also found some blood and started following it. While following the blood I found a nice shed antler on the ground. I thought to myself my buck either dropped one of its antlers or another deer happened to drop one here. I continued following the blood until it stopped. There was snow on the ground so the blood was easy to see, but it just stopped. I looked around for a little bit until I decided to walk back and meet my friend so I could carry him across a creek since he didn't have boots to get across. With better light we got back on the blood trail and where it stopped. We looked and looked but couldn't pick it back up. I then had him stand at the last blood while I did big circles in the direction the trail was going. I did about a 100 yard semi circle in the direction the deer was going and got nothing. After that I walked back to him and was about to call it a night and try in the morning. I was standing there about to tell him that when I pointed my flash light to my right. That's when he said there it is! Relief washed over me as I looked over and saw him laying there not 15 yards from the last blood and up against a log. We probably walked right by him 3 times and never saw him laying there. What he did was run about 50 yards and turned back as he went down. We were looking where the blood trail was heading and it being dark didn't see it laying against the log. Both antlers were gone so the one I found was his. We could not find his other one so either it was already gone or we just didn't see it. This is where it gets interesting. I started gutting him and when going down in between his legs I notice something isn't right. But I continue and realize there was some type of injury through his pelvis and legs. And there was some green in there. I then looked on the outside of his right back leg and sure enough there was a whole from most likely a shotgun slug. He had already been shot through the back legs and pelvis, and infection had set in. I'm guessing he was shot during the first shotgun season two weeks prior. This explained why he was losing his antlers so early. I most likely did this guy a favor since I don't think he would have made it through winter. Anyway this adventure wrapped up my hunting season. Good luck to you guys if you still have some season left, and Merry Christmas. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
MUDRUNNER
Congrats THS! Nice way to end the season. My cousin shot a nice 8 bowhunting this year, and we searched all afternoon and the next morning. Another hunter stumbled across him the next day not 15 yards from where we were looking. We must have walked right by him 3 or 4 times. I think I am pretty much done for the season. I have two big does in the freezer so that should be enough meat to get us through till next year. I'm going to spend the few hunts I have left this season trying to get one of my kids on a deer. Hope everyone has a good Christmas!
MCH
I'm still at it down here in Oklahoma. Its looking like this will be the first year since I started bowhunting 17 years ago that I willl go buck-less. I've got until January 15th, but the bucks don't move much this time of year. I'll be in my stand every weekend up until then, though.
MUDRUNNER
I brought my daughter out for an afternoon hunt yesterday. We had nice conditions, but never seen a deer.I pulled my trail cameras for the winter and movement seems to have been extremely slow the last month. The only bucks I had on camera was a couple 1 1/2 year olds. Had a couple pictures of a buck that already dropped his horns. Hopefully we can get back out and try again this weekend. RackBlaster
Sorry folks wasn't much of a team player this year, between moving into a new home early season and an injury to my back late season I wasn't able to hunt or get online as much as I wanted to. I did get a doe gun season so at least I put some meat in the freezer and added some more points. Congrats on everyone that filled a tag this year !
