Wild Rutting Action & 11 point down

I had one of the best action hunts in MO I've ever had there.  The afternoon of Nov. 5th was one of those hunts when you count chases & not deer.  I saw 8 chases that afternoon with bucks ranging from shooter 10 points to young bucks, including a 3 yr old 10 point.  I got in my stand at 3:20 and the 1st chase came by at 3:30.  It was nonstop action after that.  A wide 10 point (155 class) we have on cams was involved in 3 of the chases.  During the 1st pass he got to 30 yards but no clear shot.  One dang limb in the way.  The 1st pass he snort wheezed twice at the doe he was after.  I guess he was tired of her playing hard to get.  During the 2nd pass he paused and snort wheezed at her again.  I snort wheezed back at him ~60 yards from me in the timber.  He froze looking my way for ~30 seconds then started easing my way until a small buck ran another doe through & he took off chasing her.  DANG!!!   On the 3rd pass he got to 37 yards but still no clear shot.  Double Dang!!!!   While watching and waiting for a 4th pass, I look over my shoulder around 6:00 and across the cut corn field is a shooter 10 point working a lick branch about 125 yards away.  With him on the wrong side of the field, I figured I had nothing to loose so I snort wheezed at him.  He immediately started walking straight toward me...like reeling in a small fish.  There was also a young 8 point that was between us too.  The 8 point passed at 22 yards and entered the brush looking for the buck he'd heard.  The 10 point hits the 16 yard line...broadside...my kind of shot!  I launch my arrow and double lung him.  He went ~60 yards and crashed in brush I could see from the stand.  I waited about 15 minutes after he quit thrashing to go check him out.  No need to blood trail him.  My kind of tracking job too!  When I got there I realized he also has a short kicker off his right main beam over 1" so he scores as an 11 point.  My 11 point gross scored 150.  Can't wait to get back to MO again.  Won't be long either.

That is a great deer Al.  Good story too.  Congratulations.

Had one snort wheeze here yesterday with 6 antlerless under me eating acorns.  That buck had no antlers though, busted off at the bases.  He had been chasing a doe all over the place across my field through a brush pile back the other way a few times before coming up from a gully behind me and charging in at the deer under me.  Always cool watching and hearing vocalizations.  Had a doe this morning grunting with every step come across my field.

That's the 1st mature shooter buck I've snort wheezed into bow range and killed William.  Wheezed in some smaller bucks before and last year wheezed in a mature buck that was all busted up too.  Just like any call, they work sometimes & other times they don't.

Are you using a commercial snort wheeze call or doing a mouth call?  I have tried a few times and the deer usually take off, been a few times they just looked around like what the heck was that and pretty well went on about their business.

Think a lot of it depends on the mood and personality of the particular deer as to how they respond or don't.

I use my mouth instead of a call.  To me it sounds better than a commercial call.  I agree it depends on the mood/personality of the buck on how he responds.  It also depends on what he's doing.  If he's trailing a doe I think he's far less likely to respond other than look your direction and then go back to trailing her.  If he's not (like the situation I had) you have a better chance for a positive response.

I was hunting on the ground one time and had a buck chasing 3 does in a field across a creek I actually used the cam of my bow to snort where through and the buck immediately turned walked to the field edge make a scrape and come right to me. Only time I have called one in just with a snort wheeze.

well done Al, man that looks like one you shot last yr. no?

Nice !

The one I shot last year was a 9 point.  Didn't have that kind of mass either.

I believe we are on the backside of lockdown here now in MO.  Some mature bucks are back to running does but most of the activity is younger bucks.  This afternoon I'm going to scout/watch a cut corn field (~26 ac.) for my hunting buddy here.  Fingers crossed for him that some more mature bucks are back to looking for their next doe in heat.
