wtnhunt
guess he was good enough. Had gotten trail cam pics of this 8 that I said I wanted to get a closer look at but that I might let walk. With all that has been going on and the few decent bucks we had gotten pics of and the 9 point disappearing decided if I saw him I might not let him walk. We have only 2 had bigger antlered bucks on trail cams and not gotten pics of either of them in over a month. Got in my stand about 25 minutes before legal shooting light without any deer blowing out along the way. Pretty quiet and calm morning until the squirrels started moving around. My oldest daughter sent me a text at 6:30 and I had just put my phone back in my pocket when I heard running back to my right where I don't really have a lane. First thought was didn't sound like squirrels, but as I turned to look I saw squirrels running, and heard what sounded like a deer jump the fence. Knew it was a deer, but no idea what. The deer jumped the fence into the pasture next to our house and was between a levee and a gully headed towards where the neighbor has had trackhoes running on his property. I turned my head and could see just enough through the brush to see what I thought looked like a solid body and then caught a glimpse of antlers on his right side. I could see the beam looked good and appeared to to be past his ear. Let out a couple grunts with my call and got turned around in the tree and got the accura up and against the tree I was sitting in to get steady. He slowed and I picked out a pretty small hole that looked like there were no obstructions. It was basically a now or never type situation if he took a few more steps there would not be anymore openings. I saw body in my scope found a spot behind the shoulder and squeezed. When the smoke cleared I could see he had 4 on one side and he was on the ground trying to get up, but then I lost him. Was not real sure what he was or about my shot, was pretty awkward getting turned sitting on the edge of the stand shooting back behind me to my right. Waited about 20 minutes and got down and he was within probably 15 feet from where I shot him. Not the biggest antlered deer I have killed, but a respectable 17 inch inside 8 point. Pretty good body size deer, only gotten trail cam pics of one or two bucks that were better this year. The 240 grain xtp mag was recovered lodged just above the shoulder in the offside. Using 115 grains triple 7.

We call our son Will, but I don't go by Will or Bill. Thought I mentioned that somewhere here before. Was a time this buck would have been a wallhanger for me, have one shoulder mount smaller. fly
Very symmetrical buck! Congratulations! He looks like a mature buck for TN. The buck I just shot had the 20 G slug under the skin on the opposite shoulder. Not enough to get through. The slug looked a lot like the one in your picture. Not sure why I didn't get a pass through, pretty high velocity for a muzzleloader and plenty close enough range. Now kind of questioning if there may not be an issue since we lost the buck Catrina shot last year with the same bullet, if she had no exit either might explain how the deer made it off our property without any blood trail. Other side of the xtp, I will weigh it. I would say that is excellent expansion and retention.
