Chickens

A little off topic for these forums but I figured I'd try and get something going... anyone have chickens or farm animals? My wife and I moved to a fairly rural area two years ago and we decided to get chickens this past spring, for eggs and for my daughters to enjoy and experience. The last 5 or 6 weeks we've lost two to what I think are hawks, we've lost a couple as pullets as well due to either hawks or something else. The few times we've lost them I haven't sugar coated anything, just told my young daughters straight up, something killed the chickens and they have been ok with every kill.. anyone else have birds, predator issues? I think it's good for the kids to see the circle of life and how the food chain works.. although I wish it wouldn't happen as often as it does!

Reminds me of the first time took my daughter coyote hunting at the young age of four. Shot my first one brought it to the GM, my daughter says you shot a dog, I said yes well her lip started quivering and I said but it's a bad dog. Her lip stopped and then I explained it was a wild dog called a coyote and there were to many I was controlling the population so we would have a good deer population. Must have said something right she always asked to go again.

We did, my oldest daughter raised them as part of a 4h project through school.   Yotes got most of them.

We have had cows on our farm most the time we have had it, kids know we have lost some along the way, sometimes things happen.  We spent a fortune trying to keep one calf alive this year in vet bills only to have it not make it, now cows are way down and can't sell the calves we have ready.  Been a bad year for me.
