bbarcheryhunter
I just wanted to share season with all my friends here .. My season started back in turkey season already . I don't get out to often for Turkey but this year we did. There is a group of us 4 guys who hunt together so we decided we r going the first day of Turkey and I decided I'm going to hang my scouting cam out awhile. Never did that befor because our spot is 2 miles back in and like 2 hours away from home .anyway no turkey for me but the one guy got a turkey ..fun day anyway The end of june we went out to my uncles camp and that only 5 miles from my spot so my wife and I biked over early one morn and hiked out to my spot to check my cam.. I was happy with wat was on it .it got me started getting excited for the season
bbarcheryhunter
I have hunted this spot since 1997 and know how they travel so I didn't get our again until the first day of archery season .I was a little extra bummed wen I seen the forecast for that day but I decided I want to go anyway and check my cam to see wats on there and this is wat I found ..same buck as the first 2 pics.. he was there a lot over the summer months but after he shed his velvet he went missing in the day time.. all night time pics .That was the last good pic I got of him.. bbarcheryhunter
So our archery season started and I'm hunting the area trying not to b so focused on just that Buck but I did want to shoot him . Well my hunting buddies were seeing all the buck and all I would see was doe .. I didn't even see a buck in that spot during archery season but I kept seeing doe . One day we went out there and I had 2 of my hunting buddies on either side of me bout 200 yards either way and I didn't see a tail that day but they seen chasing all day long..think they seen like 5 Buck each and none were the same so 10 buck and I'm in the middle with not even a tail seen .. I will say this we have a private farm we hunt and we get so many other hunters trespassing that we got so tired of it this year we decided not to hunt it until late season so the place I'm talking about is state land ..I'm having a wonderful time out there not seeing anybody except my buddies ..so frustrating wen u all setup on private ground and someone comes in ..oh well so it goes some day .. Anyway I kept checking my cam and the buck was still going thru so I knew he was there .. one morn he passed in front of my stand 15 min before I got there ..it was dark yet ..exciting!! I think that was the day my buddies seen all the buck ..
bbarcheryhunter
I have another spot I can hunt close to home and I seen this Buck on cam but the problem is with this spot it's hunted so hard I don't get out there to often .. I did hunt it a couple times but nothing of this guy.. I wanted him to but just did not see him and to many hunters .. as far as I know he is still running around just talked with another guy the other day who said he just got a pic of him ..I thought if I don't get my buck duringour rifle season I would hunt late season for him .. not many hunters out then
bbarcheryhunter
Anyway our archery season cam to a end and rifle season started .. I'm all fired up and can't sleep the might befor ..wat fun.. so we head out to our spots we have bout 12 guys going out with us in rifle season so we r having a good time .. well I get setup and it's still dark and I see a flashlight coming up from the bottom so I flash to the guy so he knows I'm there .. he sits down just below me so I'm a little disappointed but oh well it's state land and I think to my self the deer come from the top down to .. anyway bout 7ish I here a deer coming in and it's a doe ..wow good start I think and u can here shots being fired across the valleys and behind us .. I'm sitting there and I here this guy below me start grunting like mad .. I'm like wats he see ...I can here deer running up thru and all of a sudden I here a deer coming from behind.. I didn't know where to look because I couldn't see the deer yet but I could hear them ..all of a sudden I see movement behind me and I see its a big deer but I can't see his head ..he stopped by that time. I think he heard the guy grunting at the deer below me . Anyway so he takes a couple steps out from behind the tree and I see horns and I see 3 on one side and I see he is out to ears so I get ready heart is pounding like crazy !! Well he kinda takes off running then stops then runs then stops..he keeps coming closer but he always stopped behind tress so no clear shot..so I see an opening up ahead and I tell my self wen he gets to there that's your best shot..well he gets to that opening and stops I out the crosshairs on him and pull the trigger he takes of and I wasn't sure if I hit him so I pump another round in my gun and find him in my scope running full blast thru the wood soon as I find him I pull trigger again and down he goes.. spined him .not the way I wanted it but I think just as I pull the trigger the first time he started running again so that put the first shot back and got liver .most times I can tell where I hit but not then..anyways then the emotions took over and I started by thanking the Lord for this Buck and the food it can bring us!! ..it's only 735 and bbd!!! I knew my kids go to school bout then so I text my wife and told her and she quick went out the door because they were leaving already to go ..of course they had to leave but they were all excited for me Anyway with all the hunting buddies out there my ph starts going crazy.. fun stuff wen u got good friends So by now I'm not sure if it's the same buck or not so I get out of my tree and walk up to it ..it's not but it's just about as big as him so now I want him to survive so I can hunt him again ..I sure wasn't upset about the one I got..not at all !! As u can tell in the pics the one I got his g3 is smaller then on the scouting cam..

bbarcheryhunter
Now if u remember I'm back in 2 miles so now the fun starts and he is a bigger Body deer for out there .. so I go a couple hundred yards and another of my group shoots and he need help tracking so I go help him and we lost blood .well by that time it 11ish and I know I better get started so I do and wat a work out..I'm in at camp around 4ish .. I used a rack packer and as u can see I put my back pack on and my gun so I didn't have anything on my back.. worked pretty good but still hard work and we have a bunch of rocks to cross so it's no easy chore but we'll worth it !!! We can eat 2 deer a year with my family so sat we went out again and I ended up shooting a doe so now we will have plenty of meat ..thank u lord !!! Wat blessing to b able to hunt and I enjoy hunting not so much just to kill but to spend time with friends a every once in awhile get some meat .. Rhino
Congratulations BB! Memorable season for you. You got a good workout on that drag too.
fly
Congratulations! I know those types of drag outs from public ground all too well. Now, if I'm hunting WAY back I take my large pack, a rope and couple trash bags. Hang the deer in a tree as best I can and butcher right where he drops. Place the meat in the trash bags and fill my pack. Then head back to camp.

fly
If you have help it's not so bad and if it is under 180 pounds and if you're in shape. The one below I got in 2008 when I was 10 years younger! He field dressed at 205lbs and I carted it out alone. Took me 6 hours to cart/drag him about 3/4 mile down a steep hill and through a creek bottom. There were no trails and a storm had knocked a lot of trees into the creek. If was opening day of a three day season and I wanted to hang it in camp for everyone to see since I only had one buck tag and would be hanging around camp a lot. My son shot a six point near the same area in 2013 and remembering that drag out from 2008 prompted me to use the field butchering method. Skinned and quartered him right there on the ground utilizing large garbage bags, no trees within at least a mile. Packed the quarters in garbage bags and carried them out in my backpack. Worked out well for that situation.
