Handicapped parking spaces

So, what's with these handicapped parking spaces? The other day, I was parked in the J.C. Pennys parking lot waiting for my wife to do some shopping, and I happened to be able to watch the handicapped parking area. I watched several people park there and then go running and skipping into the store. They were doing everything but cartwheels and back flips. Meanwhile, I see this old ancient decrepit guy who apparently had to park out in the lower 40 because all the reserved spaces were full. He's dragging a leg and pulling an oxygen cart with the one good arm that he had left. Snails were passing him on the right and turtles on the left. I even considered calling 911 for him a couple of times on some of the stops every 3 yards that he had to make. I didn't think he was going to get going again. Ok, maybe some of that is a bit of exaggeration, but you get the idea. The guy was in pretty tough shape and it was obvious that he was what the reserved handicapped parking spaces were really intended for.

Are these little handicapped signs that you hang over your mirror for sale at the department stores or something? It seems like everyone has one these days except for those that need it. I swear I saw no fewer than 6 of these so-called handicapped people pull in and out of these spots and not a one of them really looked in anyway incapacitated to me. What is wrong with people that they have to abuse every little system that people try to set up. There seems to be absolutely no consideration for those that really need to benefit from these reserved spots.

I'm telling you, I am getting more and more disgusted with people every day!

Re: Handicapped parking spaces

Alot of times Doc you see that happening when children or relatives "Borrow Gramma's StationWagon or MiniVan"and its already on the rearview mirror.

I totally agree with you that they are for people who really need them...obviously they could care less about others if they were well.

It wont stop until those who authorize the abuse of the privelege by others refuse to do so in the future.

What, your time isn't more valuable than someone ele's time Doc?

I'm being sarcastic of course. Totally agree bud. The spaces aren't abused too much where I go, but, personally, I think it comes down to a few individuals who think their time is more important than our time. They're probably the same people that race down the left lane to get ahead of you because they know the 2 lanes merge into 1 lane, and the 5 seconds they save by getting ahead of you is extremely important, maybe life threatening. mad.gif

Re: Handicapped parking spaces

I know what you mean, i see that all the time. The problem 1. temporary permits are good for so long most people are better long before it expires, and 2. like mentioned people using disabled peoples vehicles. I don't care if you have a permit, if you look able, and are moving just fine they should be able to ticket you.

Re: Handicapped parking spaces

yeah i see that often too. up here if you dont have a permit in the window its a $300 fine. i was talking with a residence security guard one day, and he said the best ticked he's ever given was to a car that was parked sideways across two hadicapped parking spaces. he charged him $600 for the two of them. man some people you cant help but wonder what's going through their minds blush.gifcrazy.gifconfused.gifgrin.gif

Re: Handicapped parking spaces

I know exactly what you mean! I have disabled plates on both of our vehicles and there are many times when I will park in a regular parking spot. It just depends on what kind of a day I am having. When my wife goes shopping, she never parks in a disabled spot!

The easiest cure is if you see someone who does not have a permit and you have a cell phone, call the cops! They will be very eager to write a good ticket!

I hate when this is abused!

Re: Handicapped parking spaces

Both my parents have handicap tags on their vehicles. My dad for heart, and knee problems, my mom for emphysema (sp??) and circulation problems. On a good day you would thingk they both are abusing the spots, but trust me, I know better.

I agree with them being abused. when I go somewhere with my parents in one of their vehicles, I feel funny parking in one of the spots. I prefer to let them off at the entrance of the store, resturant, or where ever we are going, and to park in a regular spot.
