fly
I guess it's been about 5 years since I've chased after turkey's here in IL. While deer hunting in a special draw area close to home last November I saw about 30 turkeys. This sparked me to send in a spring application for the special draw area. Just got the permit a few days ago. IL permits are only good for 5 days and unfortunately there is NO weekend hunting in the special draw area I was selected for which means I will only have 3 days to bag a bird. still... will be nice to get the old Remington 1100 out again. Rhino
Welcome back to the flock! 5 years is a long time to sit on the sidelines. Hope the weather is good for you during those 3 days Frank.
wtnhunt
Good luck Frank. Gonna be real curious to see how the loss off the neighboring woods effects the turkeys for this spring. Boy said he was gonna plant pasture, may be a good draw, i know the turkeys hammered the wheat and oat seed i broadcast on my pasture back in the early fall. Wanting some revenge. MUDRUNNER
Good luck Frank! Been a few years since I've turkey hunted myself. I got a tag last year and ended up out of town for a softball tournament, so never even made it out. I didn't even apply for a tag this year. That one season is a little weird with no weekend days included in it.
OKstate
Good luck! Hopefully the special draw area = lower pressure.
fly
Thanks everyone - Tim, the screwed up 5 day (really 3 day) season is a big reason I stopped applying 5 years ago. If it rains, or something work related comes up I'm out. However, I'm also applying for a 3rd lottery tag for an additional season of 5 days. I've never been successful getting one in the past. If I get it the second season starts on a Monday which means it will be for the full five days because it will not include a weekend. We will see...

I also got a second season permit (hunt is for Monday-Thursday). I shot at one Monday at 50-60 yards but didn't put it down. Can't hunt tomorrow but will try Thursday to fill my second permit. Al, the weather couldn't have been better. What fun it's been chasing these darn birds. Haven't heard a gobble after 8am and nothing in the fields. All the activity is in the woods. Public ground hunting I suppose. On 1/12/2017 at 10:23 AM, OKstate said: Good luck! Hopefully the special draw area = lower pressure. The first week there were a lot of guys hunting (6-8 others) in about 2000 acres of mostly mature hardwood ridges. However, I have never ran into another hunter calling or hunting after 7 mornings of hunting. This second season there has only been 2-3 other hunters in the area. The birds have certainly moved away from the easy to reach ares.
