Season in Review

Had been getting pics of a nice 9 leading up to season, then activity in the woods beside us got going and that deer disappeared, no pics of him in October and I don't think we got any pics of him again until the morning I killed him.

With the target buck seemingly no longer around settled on a decent 8 pointer with the accura on the morning of veteran's day.  He snuck through behind me and was lucky to find a small opening through the brush to get a shot through and honestly had no idea what he had for antlers other than that he was past his ears.  Saw enough body to see he looked like a 3.5 year old.  Full story here

Then a few days later my wife saw the target 9 point from the same stand I killed this deer from about 9 am, but he offered her no clean ethical shot and she had to just watch him through her scope as he disappeared behind the tree she waited for him to step out from behind.  So we had renewed hopes that deer was alive and still around.  Catrina hunted hard for several days in a row with the muzzleloader and on the morning of November 16th she was not willing to get up and get out in the cold, so I went.  I saw the 9 point and had him in range in the scope of my accura, but let him walk.  She hunted hard again after I saw him and led into the rifle season.  Opening morning she heard 2 shots well before legal shooting light and her heart sunk.  She continued hunting hard and on the morning of Nov 21'st she was wiped out and it was another pretty cold morning.  Could not get her up, so again I went to the ladder stand I had seen the deer from before but this time with my old remington 700  270.  Saw several deer that morning and was texting back and forth with Catrina.  She told me to shoot the big buck if I saw it.  As it would turn out I did see him at about 8 am and he walked back and forth along my fence in the bottom giving me good looks at him but took a minute for him to get where I thought I had a clear shot.  Noticed the deer limping as he was pacing along the fence.  I did shoot when he was where I thought I had a clear shot, but I missed the deer at just under 200 yards, then missed again with a follow up.  Catrina ended back at it and took a different buck the next morning.

Hunted pretty hard and thought maybe I didn't miss after all.  Catrina and I did some searching in an area where I had been seeing buzzards circling low and roosting on Dec. 2nd, turned up nothing.  The next morning wind was all wrong for the 2 stands we had seen the deer from, and was kind of bummed but went to the stand in our back field where we have had a pretty good streak of killing deer.  That field had been pretty slow since all the work going on started with the timbering and trackhoes running the months before.  Got up in the stand about 15 minutes before legal shooting light and then a few minutes after it was legal shooting light I saw a body at the other end of the field with my binos.  Had no clue what he was at that point, but saw him limp as he charged at a smaller deer.  Realizing it was likely the 9 point back I got my gun up and found him in the scope and put the crosshairs behind the shoulder and fired a shot when he got broadside.  Missed again.  Chambered another round he charged the smaller buck again and this time when he stopped I aimed a little high at the top of the shoulder and focused on squeezing my shot.  He took off hard this time and knew he was hit.  Full story here.

Was quite a memorable season, the events that put that buck in front of me and for me to be able to take him the third time I saw him.  Funny how things work out sometimes, between Catrina and I we had seen the deer 4 times.  Had it not been for the wind being wrong that morning I probably would have sat the other ladder stand I had seen him from twice before and probably would never have seen him.

So what's the plan with the heads / antlers William? (i Have no idea why it's trying to quote Al)

The 9 is at the taxidermist.  Going with an aggressive posture with his ears pinned back.

Was supposed to get a left turn but may have him change that.  I currently have 4 left turn deer mounts and 2 right.  The deer was with a slight left turn when i shot him.

The 8 point may clean it up for a euro, have some other skulls i need to finish up cleaning up including Catrina's last few deer too.

I had an outstanding season this year.

Killed my 1st buck on November 5th in Missouri during a GREAT hunt!  11 point scoring 150",  Story in the Bowhunting forum.

Then, 10 days later shortly after the opening of the Missouri gun season I killed the biggest 8 point I've ever killed (161 3/4").  Story in the Deer Hunting forum.

Big 8 1.jpg

Saw this great 11 point twice that I'm pretty sure is a 3.5 year old buck.  I'll be looking for him next year.

Then there was this 13 point I never saw.  I only had trail cam pics of him at night until after I was limited out with 2 MO bucks.  I have a plan for him next year...right here!

Saw some other shooter class bucks too.  I'm really looking forward to next year.  No matter what happens, it should be a fun filled 2017 season this fall.

Al, sounds like I need to be on your team for the deer contest in 2017! (LOL) William,  Mckenzie makes the best forms IMO. Going with them myself. Decided to try a double pedestal mount with my IL buck on the bottom in McKenzie's 8900 and the McKenzie 9800 for the top KY buck. I'm going with a base like the one in the picture - only a little less color.

Cool double pedestal mount idea Frank.  I like it!  Since we put all the mounts of our Missouri bucks in the camp there (well...the lodge), I'm having a replica made of the big 8 to hang at home.

As for next year's deer contest draw...LOL to both of us Frank.  We were on the same team once before a long time ago.

Going with something different was my thinking as well Tim. Additionally, a double pedestal takes up less room than two shoulder mounts on the wall and I'm hurting for wall space.  Still not certain where I'll place it - will try to get it in my living room but that will mean a wall mount currently hanging has to go elsewhere. LOL

This is the biggest 8 I have harvested to date.  I had a few pics of him on the trail cam at night throughout early fall.  He showed up early on opening day of rifle here in OK, but managed to stay well out of my range all morning.  After spending midday watching the osu cowboys beat TCU, I decided to slip down into the trees where I had seen him that morning.  After about an hour of enjoying the quiet woods, a doe come slipping through the treeline to the east and the 8pt was close behind followed by a couple more does and a younger 8pt.  He stopped about 80 yds out and I deciding that was about as long as I needed to wait for a shot.  He went down quickly and the other deer didn't even know what happened.  They stayed around until my wife brought the UTV down to pick him up.

I can't imagine having to deal with wolves......  we are just starting to see some mountain lions in the area, but they have had a limited impact that I have noticed.

After many years of denying their existence here our state has finally acknowledged we have cougars here now, and we are smack dab between a number of confirmed sightings with our property bordering an old river channel that animals tend to travel along.  They cover a lot of ground from what I understand though, so may not see a significant impact in one area.

Congratulations again okstate on that 8, awesome deer.

That sounds like the same story that was being told around here.... denied their existence for many years and have recently changed their tune with trail cam pics and confirmed sightings and one incident that I know of where one was hit by a car.

Yes, it was deny and rule out they were here despite trail cam pics, sightings and tracks for many years.   They always ruled out trail cam pics as other animals or photoshops.  Then a few years back they primed the public with an attempt at justifying the potential need for the lions as they were the only predator species once native to this area capable of helping with the pig problem but within that article still denied their existence.

Their hand kind of became forced here. They had undeniable trail cam pics from a young man and then about a month or so later a boy shot and wounded one about 15 miles away from us about 30 miles from where the prior confirmed trail cam pics were taken.  They then had hair and blood samples with which to dna test.  There have since been a number of state confirmed pics and sightings.
