Turkeygirl
Went to some state land to look for sheds and try to get some grouse. No sheds but I have never flushed so many grouse, ever! I flushed 1, couldn't get it. Kept on walking through a clear cut that is now a few years old...lots of thick brush and saplings. I stop, hear a grouse flush, can't see it, walk a few feet then another flushes, and another, then one behind me, then another one in front of me. I have never been in the middle of a grouse flock...Could never get a good shot off on the ones I did see, they are tough! I know where to go back though! Great to see/hear so many grouse. Must be low hunting pressure/predation.
MUDRUNNER
I shot one in South Dakota while on a pheasant hunt a few years ago. We would jump them, shoot and miss, then see where they went down and go after them again lol. Little suckers are hard to hit.
Shaun_300
They are hard to hit on the wing! You're usually so flustered and startled from the noise of the buggers when they take off by the time you get the gun up they're long gone lol. Last one I shot I spotted it sitting on a stump at about 40 yards. Smoked him with the single shot 20ga.
RangerClay
Glad you are seeing them. In my part of central NY the populations are way down.
Shaun_300
The other day I was walking down to get my trail cam from where I usually have it, trudging through snow and had my lab with me. One took off about 10 feet from us. Scared the livin' bejeebees out of me!! Last thing I was expecting to see!
