Outstanding Gobbling Morning

Lately, the weather hasn't been very good to go scout for gobbling turkeys on the roost...until this morning.  A cool front moved through late yesterday dumping a lot of rain that ended around 3:00.  I headed to the MS camp last night for my 2nd scouting trip.  My 1st trip was a bust due to crummy morning weather.  I woke up this morning to clear skies, no wind, and cooler air in the mid 40's.  Can't ask for much better than that!  As I was getting ready to head out on the Ranger EV this morning I heard the first distant gobble at 5:55 from the front porch of the camp.  Good sign!!!  I eased to a high listening spot using the EV where I could hear a fairly large area.  From there I heard 9 more birds gobbling.  Pinned their approximate locations down pretty good and moved on to try to cover as much area as possible before the birds shut down.  Heard and pinned down 6 more birds gobbling on the ground.  Got a bit too close to 3 of them gobbling their heads off at hens right when I eased to a stop.  By 7:00 all the gobbling activity shut down.  I managed to cover a lot of ground on the Ranger EV before gobbling shut down though.  Electric UTV's are great for turkey hunting/scouting.  In all, I heard 15 birds gobbling on our property and a couple more on the neighbors not too far away from our line.  Sure got me fired up for turkey season!  Won't be long...opens next Wednesday (March 15th).

Best of luck to you next week, Al !!   You go ahead and get things started for us.............

Thanks Don...weather permitting I'll be in the woods before dawn Wednesday.  I'm going to miss the 16th & 17th weekend hunt.  I have other plans that weekend but that's the only thing on my plate that will interfere with turkey season this spring.
