elkoholic
This season I got a little more serious about taking a turkey than I had been the past couple of seasons. No one seemed to care for the taste of wild turkey but me so I did not put much effort into taking getting one. This year I have a new recipe to try so I had to get a bird to try it out. Early afternoon and a gobbler and a couple of hens were busy feeding on an open hillside, with the gobbler doing more strutting than feeding. I managed to get within a hundred yards or so, and called the hens down the hill with the gobbler strutting along behind them. When he was at 30 yards I let him have it, before the hens could spot me and sound the alarm. He had a double beard and weighed in at 21 lbs. He only had one spur and a short 1/4 inch at that, but that is pretty typical for the Merriam's around here. It is amazing how heavy he seemed to be at the end of the mile long hike back to the truck. A beautiful spring day, a strutting tom, a little bit of luck and I could not ask for more. fly
Awesome Gobbler! I just finished my season today. Had a gobbler answering my call at sun up and another one at 8am but neither would come in. What's your new recipe?

elkoholic
Thanks guys. Turkey hunting is a blast and a good way to spend a spring day. The new recipe I'll be trying can be found here: http://www.food.com/recipe/wild-turkey-breast-165181 As for the legs/thighs, they will be cooked in the slow cooker until tender and then incorporated into soup. The above recipe can also be cooked in a slow cooker, but I'm going with the oven baked method.
