Bowie has been an absolute perfect family member until this past week.  All of a sudden he took to digging in one specific spot in the yard.  he dug up and killed a 5 year old Japanese Red Maple.  Nothing I do will keep him from returning and digging up this spot.  I keep refilling the hole and he keeps digging it back up.  I have tried the sprays to keep dogs and cats away and Cayenne Pepper but to no avail.  I am at my wits end, he now has an area about 4 feet in diameter and about 3 feet deep.

Shovel some of her poop into the hole. 49 out of 50 dogs won't dig or loiter around their own poop. Every random time one of mine digs and starts a hole, in goes a log and the digging there stops. Just hope yours isn't the 1 of 50 that enjoys digging in their own poop.

Put the dog on a lead.

Geesh Joe I read that fast and thought it said: Put lead in the dog. LOL  I thought man that's a little overkill for digging a hole!!

Sounds like you got it figured out Ross. Hopefully he stays away now. I'm thankful my dog doesn't dig! I take pride in my nice neat lawn and her hind end would get a kickin' if she ever dug a hole in it!!

When I was younger my friend had a yellow lab that used to dig up freshly planted flower bed, to cool him out the used electric fence he got a couple shocks and stayed out.  Had a dog when I was a kid that took a pee on a fence post with an electrified fence , worst noise I ever heard , he yiked all the way home about a mile away he sure didn't do that again.

LOL!  Many old school dog owners think it's terrible to put a dog on a lead.  Every dog I've ever owned has been hooked to a 50' rope and they don't mind.  Sure feels good to let a dog out to do "their business" and know they are not chasing deer or getting tangled with a skunk.  Our dog gets to run free almost every day but under supervision.

Buy an airsoft gun.  When he starts digging give him a few of pops in the rear.

Friend of mine had an issue with his dog not wanting to listen when he tried calling him inside.  He bought one and after a while all he had to do was shake the gun so the BB's would rattle and the dog would come running back to the house.
