livetohunt228
Hi all! Hope everyone is doing well! I was looking for any info or advice on these 2 muzzleloader, the CVA OPTIMA V2 and the CVA WOLF. This would be my 1st muzzleloader and I've got it narrowed down to these 2. I'm not the best shot with a gun and don't prefer to shoot big loads. My brother has a Thompson Center Encore and that thing kicks like a mull. I know he shoots a big load out of it though to match up to his scopes ballistics on range. Unlike me, he's a really good shot but like me, isn't very knowledgeable in muzzleloaders. If I could get a gun sighted in and accurately shooting at 100 yds, I would be more than happy. I know it will take lots of practice and figuring out loads and all but I guess the 1st decision I need to make is, which muzzleloader, the Optima V2 or the Wolf. Optoma V2 must be the better quality gun as its more expensive but that doesn't necessarily mean it's better for me as a beginner to muzzleloading. Anyone that owns either gun and their thoughts on it or any advice would be greatly appreciated! wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Don't own either of those but I have an accura and been happy with it. If it were my choice, of those 2 would go with the optima. With regards to loads, really the best advice I can give is to use loose powder and work up a load that gives you your best accuracy. No need in loading three 50 grain pellets in a gun if accuracy suffers as a result. Sweet spot for accuracy in my accura with the bullets I am using is around 115 grains of triple 7. Ballistics on bdc type reticle scopes can be matched up to different loads, you need to shoot your gun with your bullet and powder charge to see where it hits at corresponding ranges with your scope. Turkeygirl
Welcome! Last couple years I've shot a TC Omega Z5. Last year put a scope on it, really dialed it in, 3 bullets touching at 100 yards in the bullseye. Good shooting gun, yes it kicks a little but it kills based on my results this past season. I also am looking at CVAs, particularly the Accura V2. I want something with an easily removed breech, easy to clean, etc. I spoke to someone who loves his CVA, said it's great shooting, great trigger, easy to clean, and accurate. I have also been considering the TC ProHunter fx but leaning towards a CVA. Good luck in your search and it'll be a matter of trying different loads to see what it shoots. My TC Omega likes 2 Triple 7 pellets and Hornady SST. Never shot it though with 3 pellets, saw no need. Took a doe at about 110 yards with the gun. Thanks a lot for the great advice. I have heard nothing but good things about the accura, just a bit out of my price range. Take care! I have a friend that has the Accura MR, I believe that is what it's called and he loves it. I think I'm going to go with the Optima V2. Good luck with whatever you decide on and thanks a lot for the advice. Take care! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
wtnhunt
I picked up my accura v2 when cabelas had a deal on them, used some points too. Think the MR(mountain rifle) version came out the year after I bought my accura. CVA has improved the ramrod, on my gun it has the twist up threaded end and no palm saver. I use a range rod for shooting practice. I have seen the optima v2's at wal mart at very reasonable prices, was watching for them to clearance the few they had left after season last year, but they never did. Thought about picking up one to have another extra ml'er. My wife hunts with my old TC black diamond during our ml'er season, sometimes on rare occasions we have managed to both be able to hunt at the same time would be nice to have an extra gun. With our youngest kid 6 years old now, hoping to drag him along a little. One thing I will mention is to be sure with whatever break action you buy that you do not overlook the action and the cleaning of the firing pin assembly. It is pretty easy to clean, but if you overlook it and shoot much you could have blowback cause a sticky firing pin especially in cold situations.
