longislandhunter
I have a 12 guage 870 special purpose deer slug gun w/3" chamber, rifled barrel, and I mounted a scope on it and I absolutely love it. Mine didn't have the cantilever scope mount so I had to buy, and mount, the special scope mount adapter that you install on the receiver. It works great, I sighted in the scope when I first mounted it on the gun several years ago and the scope, even after all the pounding of travel, storage, hunting and shooting has never moved one bit, so I know the scope base it extremely stable, however if you have the opportunity to purchase the 23" barrel with the cantilever scope mount I definately would choose that option. The scope is perfectly centered over the receiver, the cantilever system provides a rock solid mounting base, and you don't have to mess around with a scope mounting adaptor bracket. Whatever you choose good luck with your new gun.
AJ
Re: 870 Congratulations on your new acquisition. As far as being worth the extra money, its only $10 more (MSRP) for the longer barrel. I would go with the longer barrel. It will give higher velocities, move the blast further away from the shooter, add slightly more weight (not much) to help reduce recoil (not much). archerjg
Re: 870 Good luck on your choice. I love my 870 so far it has never failed me. I have the 21" barrel for slugs, but that is what came with it. I would go with the 23" barrel as AJ stated. Archerjg
WABS
Re: 870 I've got a 870 Express which couldn't be more reliable. I also bought (years ago) a slug barrel (smooth bore) with rifle sights for around $100. I've shot Foster type slugs through it for years and I get near muzzle loader accuracy from it out to 100 yards.
Hillbilly
Re: 870 I first got my 870 when I was 15 years old. I'm now 21 so add up the years. My gun is gettin old, but still very reliable. I use it for deer and rabbit hunting. Heck I might just use it for duck hunting in the near future.
