Re: How many hunters on a 40 acre piece of land

A 40 acre parcel is not a very big hunting area. Depending on the size of the herd, and the capability of the habitat, the answer to your question could range all over the place. Seldom is the habitat laid out such that the deer use all of it. Preferred food sources and bedding terrain may keep them in one little corner of your 40 acres. Or you may have food resources laid out across the whole 40 acres that will keep the deer milling throughout the whole place. Another factor would be the shape of the 40 acres. I have approximately 40 acres that is only 400 feet wide. I find myself hunting the next door state land a lot. grin.gif

I don't think anyone could give you a real good answer without a good bit of scouting first. After a while, you will know that 40 acres like the back of your hand, and it will be obvious just how many stands that particular parcel will support. Of course, the other thing to remember is that if you sit in the same stand every day, even a good spot will turn cold. So, you need the ability to rotate through several areas without disturbing the other hunters that are using that parcel. And of course they must be able to do the same thing.

40 acres sounds like a big hunting area, and, of course depending on the deer density it may very well turn out to be. But, most of the deer country that I've seen, I would guess that 1 hunter and maybe 2 at the most would be able to work 40 acres without eventually spooking the deer right off the property or eventually getting to the point where you are interfering with each other.

All the above comments are relative to bowhunting. If you are talking gun hunting, forget all that. During gun season, you can pack as many gun hunters on there as the shape of the terrain will safely allow.

Re: How many hunters on a 40 acre piece of land

40 ACRES IS PLENTY OF PROPERTY , IF YOU HUNT IT RIGHT . STAY AWAY FROM THE BEDDING AREAS. A LOT OF HUNTERS WANT TO GET RIGHT IN TIGHT ON THE BEDDING AREAS, BIG MISTAKE. ANOTHER THING TO CONSIDER IS YOUR PREVAILING WIND ON THE PROPERTY. IF THE WIND IS AWAYS BLOWING YOUR SCENT OVER THE PROPERY EVERY TIME YOU WALK IN YOUR 40 ACRES. WILL REALLY TOUGH TO HUNT ONCE THOSE DEER GET A WIFF OF YOU. I HUNT A SMALL 35 ACRES, PIE SHAPED PARCEL THAT IS ACTUALLY AN AWESOME PIECE OF PROPERTY. I HAVE KILLED 120" - 128" DEER EVERY YEAR ON THIS PROPERTY. AND IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER. WE USUALLY ONLY HAVE 2 MAYBE 3 HUNTERS HUNTING THIS PROPERTY AT ONE TIME , BUT USUALLY I AM THE ONLY ONE HUNTING IT. ALOT TO CONSIDER BUT IF THE PROPERTY IS ANYTHING LIKE MINE AND YOU HUNT IT RIGHT IT COULD BE YOUR OWN LITTLE SANCTUARY!

Re: How many hunters on a 40 acre piece of land

WOW!!!! I feel for alot of people, 40 acres is the size of my yard and it isn't big enough for more than I in my books. I guess we're just spoiled up here in Saskatchewan, I'm usually the only one in an area from 160-1000 acres plus. I guess when that is all you have you find a way to make it work so in reality I have no idea how many guys you could put on 40 acres. confused.gif

Are lease has 1 person for about ever 120 acers. For 40 I don't think I would go with more than 4 people unless it's very dence, or your using buddy stands. For bow hunting I wouldn't go more than 1 for every 5 acers, again depending on the terrain and dencity of the land.

Man, I'm glad I get to hunt where I do, most of the time there is only 3 shooters, with 3 people filming, and that is on 15,000 acres of prime deer country. Many of the places border sanctuaries, with no hunting pressure at all. The deer come out and feed off of the santuaries, in corn, alphalpha, and pea crops.

Re: How many hunters on a 40 acre piece of land

On our 60 acres plut the 30 adjacent to us it is not really enough for my just family with all the hunting that is done around us. We see alot of deer, just not that many quality deer. I would say it really depends on the area and how many other hunters there are around. I think they say a deer for every 6 or 7 acres, so that is not really very many deer to expect to see for four guys on that small a parcel. Think four is really too many in all honesty. I would say more like 2 max.

Depends...If they are not using a good scent control system...zero!! If they are, then I say two, that way there is still a little room for changing stand locations to keep the impact low. Also depends on how they shoot and what they shoot. If they are a reflex shooter that empties their gun every time they see a deer, back to zero. If they take one well executed shot, then 2.

Re: How many hunters on a 40 acre piece of land

Depending on the lay of the land (density of cover), possibly two people if bowhunting (one on each end of the pine plantaton) and only one if rifle hunting. If the deer are coming off of nearby bedding areas onto your property (if for example you border a large swamp or cedar thicket) to feed on your property or the property is a funnel to and from the bedding area maybe then you can have more hunters. Sinse I hunt large tracts of Forest Service land here I often have thousands of acres to myself once I get back off the roads, and it is hard to imagine hunting forty acres and being able to get to and from stands without messing up each others setup. Good luck with the new property.

Re: How many hunters on a 40 acre piece of land

I'd say no more then 4 or 5 unless the terrain is hilly and has land features that can block or stop bullets. I have a 100 acre piece and 40 of it is open feilds. There are 2 places within that 40 acres I allow hunters during rifle season. Bow hunters I basically cover every trail.... LOL

Up in the wooded areas its very rocky and steep terrain with log road down threw every funnel. I could put about 4 or 5 gun hunter up there but in stands only, no walking around.

Every piece of property is a little different.

I would not go by hunter:per acre ratios. Base it on whats safe...
