maddhunter
Re: Food Plots I have a PH of 7 and sandy soil. I had good luck so far with a blend of clovers I got at my local COOP and Alfalfa Rack from the Whitetail Institute. Also buy my fertilizer from the COOP, they can tell you what you need from your soil test and what you decide to plant. Mine did my test for free. Check out Whitetail Institute
AaronS
Re: Food Plots There are many good seeds and seed blends out there. Hamann Farms, Tecomate, Whitetail Institute just to name a few. You can try one to see if you like it, or you can try several. I currently have 3 different types of plots and plan to add 2 new types in the next year or so. Are you wanting an annual plot or a perennial? The perennial will take a little more work to get established but will last up to 5 or more years with proper maintenance. Your local county ag office (called the ASCS here) can help you with a soil test, and the Whitetail Institute and other companies offer them also. Should be less than $10. When you send in the soil sample you should fill in on the sheet what crop you intend to grow as this will determine the proper mixture of fertilizer and lime. Legumes (clovers, alfalfas) make their own nitrogen so if you would use a fertilizer with N, the N would go to waste. If you have a local co-op or feed mill they usually have cheaper fertilizer than other places, and they can blend the mix you want.
Tominator
Re: Food Plots Indiana has it pretty good. Wthhnt and dogdoc can fill you in too. A lot depends on what you want to do as far as your deer herd. Nutrition or big racks, or both, perennial or annual.
RatherBowHunt
Re: Food Plots I have purchased a hand pH tester and it was testing around 6.7 2 years ago and i used 20-20-0 fertilizer on my bio-logic and it turned out awesome....and last year it tested about 5.9 so i put lime on it and i couldnt believe the difference...i went from seeing maybe 5-6 deer a night to about 15-30 a night in a 2 acre plot......thanks guys just wanted to see your opinions..... dogdoc
Re: Food Plots Few questions: Where are you from? When do you want to plant (spring or fall)? Annuals or perennials? Have you done any prep yet such as soil samples? todd
VtBowhunter
Re: Food Plots If you have a ph of 7 and sandy soil then the ground won't hold much moisture, so I would suggest Imperial Whitetail Extreme. Works great in sandy stuff, and is good in PH's of 5.5 to 7.3 or something like that.
