Re: Food Plots

I have a PH of 7 and sandy soil.

I had good luck so far with a blend of clovers I got at my local COOP and Alfalfa Rack from the Whitetail Institute. Also buy my fertilizer from the COOP, they can tell you what you need from your soil test and what you decide to plant. Mine did my test for free.

Check out Whitetail Institute

Re: Food Plots

There are many good seeds and seed blends out there. Hamann Farms, Tecomate, Whitetail Institute just to name a few. You can try one to see if you like it, or you can try several. I currently have 3 different types of plots and plan to add 2 new types in the next year or so. Are you wanting an annual plot or a perennial? The perennial will take a little more work to get established but will last up to 5 or more years with proper maintenance.

Your local county ag office (called the ASCS here) can help you with a soil test, and the Whitetail Institute and other companies offer them also. Should be less than $10. When you send in the soil sample you should fill in on the sheet what crop you intend to grow as this will determine the proper mixture of fertilizer and lime. Legumes (clovers, alfalfas) make their own nitrogen so if you would use a fertilizer with N, the N would go to waste. If you have a local co-op or feed mill they usually have cheaper fertilizer than other places, and they can blend the mix you want.
