Rhino
OK teammates...ready to go! I'm waiting on cooler weather before I go to MO to kick off my season. Looks like I'll head that way this weekend. The season opened on 9/15. Cory...I'm picky in what I'll shoot but no promises on giving you a head start. Also, I'm a bit more handicapped than most hunters choosing to bowhunt mainly in MO. Their gun season is only 11 days in mid November. If I kill a nice one before the MO gun season opens, I'll probably bowhunt during the gun season too. I mainly gun hunt in MS but MS doesn't have near the quality of mature bucks that MO has. Last year I didn't kill a buck in MS but I did kill 2 real nice ones in MO. BTW...odd number years have been unlucky for me in MO. I haven't killed a mature buck in MO yet during an odd number year. I hope to break that jinx during this 2017 season. Edited September 19, 2017 by Rhino
Rhino
Teammates...hope you check in soon. Heading to Missouri Monday for 6 days of bowhunting. I'll take a short break (few days) after that to catch up on bills then head back again. My son & his best friend will join me during the 2nd trip. While I'm there, I'll be out of touch with the forum.
pointing_dogs_rule
Rhino??? Has this guy shot anything in the last 10 years ???? Glad to have you aboard. I'm like Rhino in that I am picky. Usually something real big or a doe. Kinda like swinging for the fences..... home run or strike out . good luck to all the dog
Rhino
Back for a real short break. Mature bucks weren't moving much at all. I saw one of our mature shooters the last afternoon but closest he got was ~100 yards. It was the buck with the double main beams on his right side. He's impressive! Had a couple of 3 year old 8 points inside the 30 yard line but that's not what I'm after. Heading back to MO Thursday. My son and his best friend are meeting me there Thursday night to hunt through the weekend. I'll be there through the following weekend. Can't kill one at the house. BTW...LMBO at you Marty. Nope haven't done much damage the last 10 years. Edited October 3, 2017 by Rhino
ny_gun
Hey Everyone... Sorry I am late to check in. I do have some good news. I shot a buck on opening night in NY (10/1) so we will have a few point as soon as I post it. It is far from my largest archery buck but I had decided going into this season I was going to take the first deer (buck or doe) that presented an opportunity while I had one of my kids in the blind with me. Well it only took ~20-minutes on Sunday evening for my youngest son (6) to witness the whole thing.

pointing_dogs_rule
CONGRATS!!!! Great to have taken out your son. I am sure that he was thrilled. That's point on the board (is he a 3 point).
Rhino
Congratulations!!! WTG!!! I'm just checking in while relaxing in MO before this afternoon's hunt. Been typical early season sightings. Saw a big, mature 8 point late Wednesday afternoon but he never got closer than 125 yards. Nice to see something besides does, fawns and little bucks. Bucks are scraping a lot now but from sightings and trail cams, mature bucks aren't moving much during daylight hours right now. Typical early season stuff...some call the October lull. Hope the cool front moving in Sunday will spark some mature buck daylight movement. I'll head home next Thursday for a break before returning for the start of rutting action. Rhino
Back home to catch up and rest up with the rut coming up real soon in MO. The last afternoon I hunted (Monday) I passed a head scratcher mature buck...twice. He's a main frame 9 point with a 2 1/2" kicker off his left G2. He was easing around feeding on acorns. Had him at about the 30 yard line twice, ~1.5 hours apart feeding on the same oak tree. Nice buck but since MO archery hunters can only kill 1 buck before the opening of gun season (Nov. 11th), taking that buck now was not worth missing this season's best rutting action. We have too many better mature bucks on cams I'd like a chance to put a tag on. I'm heading back to MO on Oct. 30th for a long haul hunting trough the first 3 days or so of their gun season. Until then, I'll be resting up for that hunt and catching up at home.
pointing_dogs_rule
So last evening, just before shooting hours ended and "decent" buck started making his way out of the woods. I was in a stand 75 yards into the woods. I passed at a distance then he walked right to my tree (15 yards away). Through the 3x scope his rack looked like a shooter. (with all the leaves the woods can get low on light before hours are over). I shot and he ran. I stayed in the tree a while and then got down and looked for blood. I could not find any blood in the dark. I will head out this morning and look for blood. I thought that I heard a crash after the shot. No need to go walking around in the dark on an "unsure hit". I have missed before at the distance as I have shot over the deer from a treestand. Wish me the best of luck as I absolutely HATE wounded or gut shot deer (as do we all). Lots of prayers last night for a "clean miss or a dead deer this morning".

pointing_dogs_rule
Thanks Rhino. Prayers helped. No more then 60 yards from where I shot him. Bigger then I thought, however, not a real monster. Meat in the freezer.

Rhino
Congratulations Marty. Nice, mature 8 point there. Martin's right...nothing wrong with him at all!
Rhino
I'm still trying to fill my 1st MO buck tag. Rutting activity the past few days is picking up a lot but no shooter bucks have come in bow range yet. I'll be spending a lot of time hunting here in MO until after the first couple of days of the MO gun season. Then I'll take a short break and go after them again. Heading out to a stand in about an hour.
Rhino
Teammates...I'm on the board with a real nice NT buck...10 points total including the double beam on his right side and a hooked tine off of it ~2 1/2" long. I shot him yesterday afternoon at ~6 yards and recovered him last night. Didn't want to take any chances of pushing him so I waited 3 hours before tracking him. He didn't go 50 yards past where I last saw him. Left a blood trail Ray Charles could have followed. Here's a velvet picture I posted from my thread in the Bowhunting forum (Beginning of the 2017 Hit List). I'll take daylight pics today and post them in the entry thread when I get home later next week.
