hoosierhunter
Whoa- yeah I'd say we are very strong. Â I will be hunting Indiana and Iowa this year. Â We kicked off on September but I haven't been out yet. Â Definitely have a few shooters to chase
fly
Frank (fly) checking in. I'm hunting IL and KY this year. My season already started - passed on some smaller bucks and a doe that didn't present the shot I wanted. IL has legalized Xbow the entire archery season and my special draw hunt is Oct 1-7 and that will be my best chance at a monster. I've been scouting and hanging stands already - saw a couple 3.5 year olds in the 120's and a monster 160+ inch 50 yards from where my stand is located. Wish me luck! fly
Saw a big one this AM as soon as I got on stand. Too dark for a shot and couldn't tell any thing except that he was a shooter.
hoytshooter09
Good luck on the rest of your hunt hope u get a chance at a good one. hoosierhunter
Weather hasn't been cooperating here in Indiana. Â I hunted on Sunday evening trying to see a deer I want to judge in person. Â With only one buck allowed in the statewide season, it makes me get pretty picky to start the season.
fly
The weather in IL has been terrible. Actually hunted the AM of the 4th and saw ZERO deer. First time that has happened in this particular special draw area. With my hunt drawing to a close, temps in the 80’s, and humidity at infinity% I decided to take the first decent buck to give me a good shot. Well, it happened. This eight point isn’t breaking any records but I’m happy with him. Having two IL buck tags made the decision easier. A lot of time and effort went into this buck and that’s what makes it a trophy regardless of score. I’ll post more pics and details in the deer hunting room later. hoytshooter09
Nice buck Frank nice to get one the board too. Had alot of deer movement past few days high was 49 here yesterday had alot a deer moving. Passed on a few smaller ones and had two 140" at 70 yards or so. Made some minor treestand location changes so hopefully it pays off.
hoosierhunter
Laying low around here right now. Â I have my #3 hitlister patterned great, but it's tough to get after him right now because my #1 deer is one that I passed last year and we have a shed off him. Â I have no idea what's waiting for me in Iowa, so I'll let the imagination run for a few more weeks on those bucks!
fly
Same here Patrick - only been out one AM since the 7th. Weather hasn't been good at all and I've been very busy at work. Probably won't get munch hunting in till after Halloween.
fly
Went out yesterday AM as the weather has been much better. Had a 2.5 year old 7-point walk by around 8am. He wasn't displaying any rut behavior at all. No scrapes and no fresh rubs yet. I expect them to start showing up any day now.
hoosierhunter
I've been out twice since the weekend with positive movement. Â this cold front is nearly perfect to jumpstart the game. Â I'll be amping up here this week and then starting on Holloween it's 14 days of vacation dedicated to multiple states and tags!!!
fly
Went out this AM for a few hours before heading to work. Saw a non-mature 6-point sniffing all around on the ground. Definitely checking. 30 minutes later here comes a mature doe with it's fawn from this past spring. It's about to bust loose here in IL! fly
It's November! How are my brothers doing in the deer woods? I took a doe in KY a couple weeks ago but haven't seen a shooter buck. Hunted 8 hours yesterday and 2 this AM - didn't see a deer.
hoytshooter09
Been out a few times past week seen a few does and one small buck. Nothing this morning except a coyote. I will go out tomorrow morning then after that I'll have Thursday and Friday to hunt a really good spot that's done good for us in the past few years. Been seeing a ton of scrapes and rubs, had the small buck come into my rattling. Hopefully I can tag out on a decent one here soon.
hoosierhunter
I'm headed home from Iowa right now and that means one thing, my archery tag has been filled!!!!!  The 3.5 days I spent hunting in Iowa were like no other in terms of quantity and quality.  I literally saw more deer over 130 inches than under!  Just an amazing experience.  the hunt unfolded with the NE wind I meeddd to hunt the #1 stand on the property.  It's bullet proof because you walk a creek nearly a mile back in and pop out into a ditch for 75 yards and then climb into a tree.  Basically no intrusion whatsoever yet your a mile back in.   Right at first light this buck appeared north of me about 125 yards. He proceeded my direction without any calling so I let him come.  He choose to veer off and check a scrape in some thick cover at 24 yards.  I drew in him twice, but couldn't let an arrow go for fear of hitting an unseen twig and wounding him, so he got to walk off.  30 minutes later a doe busts out from a trail in the same spot where this deer originally came from.  She headed the other direction with a 140 inch 4.5 year old 8 following behind.  I actually passed that deer two days earlier.  About 20 minutes later, my deer popped out in the same trail and headed on her track.  I grabbed my rattle bag and did a soft rattle that stopped him in his tracks followed by two rolls of the can call.  At this point he stood perfectly broadside and looked both directions before licking his lips and committing to me.  He walked the exact same path and worked the same scrape hit me hit an hour earlier.  The difference this time is that it's full light and I know where my holes are now.  I come to full draw and in the heat of the moment I stopped him too early behind some brush.  At this point I have what I know is a fully mature deer on full alert so I can't stop him again.  I know I'm going to have to kill him on the move so I move my pin into the opening out in front of his chest and the second his front shoulder touched my pin I released the shot.  He never knew what hit him.  He mule kicked and bounded off to about 90 yards and looked around for what happened.  I starts getting real wobbly before going down into the creek.  I knew I shot a fully mature animal, but we were unsure of who he was until we could go back and view old pictures.  Upon review I've shot Steven, who is either 5.5 or 6.5 and a perfect specimen to take.  He really hasn't grown in the last three years and is a perfect ending for my first ever hunt in Iowa!

fly
Very cool Pat! He's a stud! With all those deer I'm assuming this was an outfitted hunt you were on? If so who were they and how difficult was it to get a tag?
hoosierhunter
Thanks guys. This was private ground owned by my buddy who got me started in hard core management.  It's a 1 every 4 years deal and 700-750 by the time you add preference points in.
